Is this program a must?

Why does it rename my photo's into rolls?..........man they are hard to find! Can anyone make this transition to Mac for PC a bit easier for me............any tips? Need a easier way to work with (and find) my files. I'm only using it for photo's, and I only have CS2 right now.

......and while I go ya 2 more questions-

Where is the backgound for CS2? Until I open a photo I see my desktop behind it, the windows version has a grey background?

And why when I resize does the whole window resize down too? I like to keep a background around the photo......not the window the same size as the photo. Otherwise, I like to have the window open to full page and the photo working inside it, not the window following the photo size. And I tried un-checking the option in photoshop preferences.......no luck.

.....OK 1 more, WTH is this "rolls" thing? I made the mistake of draging 20 photos into IPhoto separatly, now I have 1 photo in each "roll". So can I delete these.......put them together?........is it bad to rename the "rolls"? I created a new gallery in IPhoto when I downloaded them, but then when I look for them in the P.S file browser the dumb things are listed as "rolls" again.......WTH???

.......I know, I need a Mac class.......just looking for a little help to get started

I used I-photo till I got CS3
I photo seems to change the photo as well, it really annoyed me
but you film rolls are always in the order you downloaded off your camera, and located in
Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2007/Roll what ever is your next

you can rename the rolls as well
I liked the layout of iphoto for viewing, hated you can not delete from that view

If you don't want to use iPhoto for your image management, you can disable its automatic launch when you plug in your camera. You do this by launching Image Capture in your Applications folder on your hard drive.

There's a full screen mode in Photoshop. You cycle through its different backgrounds by pressing the F key.

I can't help you with this one - I don't use iPhoto; I use Aperture.

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

not sure about iphoto... not too hot on it, even though i use it.

the window thing... is one of the things i really like about macs, having multiple applications open at the time all stacked up and it being easy to switch between them and see whats going on in other things. BUT not so great in photoshop when you want to focus on an image. there is a solution, tap the 'f' key, this toggles between the 3 view modes.

i like working in the second mode with the grey background, then if i want to preview an image fullscreen i press f again to get a black background and press tab to toggle the toolbars on and off.

are you aware of expose on a mac? this is a really neat function. for example, if you've got a few files open in photoshop and you're working in fullscreen mode and you want to drag a layer to another file you'd normally have to arrange your windows so that you can see both images and drag from one to another. i think a much better way to do this is to pick up the layer/selection/whatever like you normally would, then tap f10 (expose, within application) or f9 (expose, all applications) which gives you an overview of all the images open, then just drag and hold onto the image you want to drop it on. hopefully that makes sense!

have fun, you'll get the hang of it, and never want to go back;)

Thanks guys!

Just had Apple on the phone (for a small email issue), but in so many words they basically said I don't have to use IPhoto. To me it's just to many folders to open up, and I hate the "roll" thing. So basically I'm just going to set up a "My Pictures folder on the desktop and work with it like windows. I'm not big on the whole "sort by star" thing, and don't give them Key words, finding them in the folder I have put them in works the best for me. Maybe that's bad because I'm setting up a "windows" type file system, but that's what I'm used to.

Anyone else do this.........or does this start a problem? Sorry for the stupid questions, I want to use the Mac as it was intended to not lose any funtions, but opening 5 folders to get to my pictures.........(not to mention the fact that they get renamed) kinda makes no sense to me.

Any feedback is welcome.

......oh and whats the deal with Safari..........I go to FM (Fredmiranda.com) and I don't see the Icon for the persons profile, just their name. I can't see there info........kinda werid.

The Roll thing is a folder it generates when you download your photos onto the Imac
it does not rename your images, s I said you can just rename the roll name folder
You can also just drag the folder alias onto your desktop for a quick folder link.
you can get Firefox actually for mac now, works pretty well for my liking

"Rolls" were developed to simplify storing digital photos for the general public not for the more advanced user. If you don't want to use Lightroom or Aperture, there are other alternatives available such as Shoebox (external link) or iView Media Pro (external link).

Here (external link) is a link to a quick explanation of how to use Exposé.

David Pogue has written a book on switching to a Mac from PC's. You might find it helpful.

I have no problem in Safari seeing the avatars on FM. The forum changed the way that profiles are shown though, hover the mouse pointer over the "PROFILE" button and whatever that user has in his profile will show up in a window - move the mouse away & the window disappears.

I hope this was somewhat helpful to you.

I transfered to a Mac about 8 months ago....and it's not a PC....and does take a little getting used to....but when you get the hang of it it's a peice of cake....and I don't have any plans to ever buy another PC....
