you tend to hand hold or with large glass use a monopod you follow the moving item as it come towards you focusing as it does then when it gets to the place where you want to take the picture you press the trigger and then follow the item as it passes. Its not as easy as it sounds

There is some great work here.


The equipment list:
20D, EF-S IS 17-85mm with hood and filters, EP-EX15, Grip BG-E2,
4 2GB SanDisk EXtream III CF cards, Dell Inspiron,
Manfrotto 3205 Tripod, Lowepro Orion AW backpack,

2 from my first day shooting any sort of auto racing:
