Broken 580 EX

Thanks John I ordered the parts and my hubby came home from work with a bag for me...a new 580ex...unfortunately he went to the local camera store and paid a small fortune for it! haha...well I guess he felt so bad that he wanted to replace it!! So now I will have 2 580EX's....

Same thing happened to me - repair was dead easy and the flash is working really well.

Kim, that exact same thing happened to me this weekend. My wife handed me my 30D with my 580 on it and it slipped through my fingers. The exact same piece cracked in half. I thought about trying to repair but not sure if it will still work. UGHGH! fortunately we have 4 other flashes at our disposal but I sure did love my 580. Then again, maybe they are not well built if the exact same piece broke on both of us.....hmmmmm.

Outstanding, Kim. I may pick up a 430EX to compliment my 580... the Sigmas really came through, but the Canon flashes are so much better.

I dropped my 580 in the parking lot and sent it to Canon for repairs. I'm hoping nothing is wrong. I just broke the little red piece in front of the sensor. It is still under warranty. They didn't ask how it happened and ok'd the repair. Send it. It takes 10 business days normally.

About the Sigma or 430ex. I have the 430 and it is quite capable, but not as powerful as the Sigma. If you know you need that extra power, I'd say go with the Sigma. But the 430 with the sync ability is really great. I use the 550, 430 and 550 all the time as strobes. Good Luck!

I already have two of the Sigma's... and yeah they have good power. But what I missed most about my Canon more was the 360° swivel head and the one button operation. The Sigma's don't swivel beyond straight up in portrait orientation which meant I had to bend myself to bounce the flash where I wanted it... unless I held the camera with the shutter release at the bottom which defeats the purpose of having a grip... lol. And... you have to use two seperate buttons to control tilt and swivel. Boooo

That's the main reason I got the 430EX. It has all the features the 580 has but smaller. It's a great little lens for under $300. I was going to recommend getting that one because the controls are actually very easy. If I can understand them, you bet it's worth it.

old thread, but my 430 broke and the part was 6$ + shipping from canon Canada. same part number.

Yeah..my new part worked. I bought an extra one in case I ever needed it. Flash has been working great
