This guy was nice enough to invite me into his shop and let me take a few photos while he was hard at work. CC welcome

Nice effort. Would like to see the tattoo tool in focus, with the rest sharp, to show emphasis, rather than the selective coloring. Or both. Keep it in focus, and color it, but I find it confusing to my pea sized brain, exactly what you were trying to do. Soft focus to de-emphasize the tool, followed up with coloring to emphasize the tool. There's a visual disconnect. Love that the tool is lit by the natural light, again, drawing attention to it, but i guess I really think colored or not, it should have been the single thing in the photo that was sharply focussed. Love your crop, love, love the angle and like the idea of photographing the face/artist etc. the way you did. sue cassidy

Agreed, the tool needs to be in focus IMO

I really do like the idea, but I have to agree with the other comments. More on the gun or tattoo and less from the artist's face and earring

I actually really like the photo. I love the tool not in focus, I love the dark feel. It leaves thoughts to be imagined.

I was finding hard to make out what he was doing until I had a look at Sue Cassidy's comments.
A picture should not be that hard to understand or make sense of.

I really like it. Especially the emphasis on the artist and not his tool, however I think I would like it without the selective coloring more.

Thanks everyone for all of the helpful comments I think I do have one where he is blurry and the tool is the focal point of the picture. I will see if I can find it and post to see what you guys think. Thanks again for the opinions :)

And yet the artist is the one making the tat-- not the tool.
I like this photo with the focal point as is. Most often the shot of this nature is with the tool or work in focus, so this is different, and welcome by my opinion. The high colour blurred in the back is nice and complements where blurred.

i can't pinpoint it but I think the first picture is great. If there wasn't a title "inked", i probably wouldn't know what it is though.

if it's displayed in context, it's fabulous. nice capture.

I thought of this nearly too late myself. I am hoping to get one of my photographer friends to come to my 4-5 hr session this Saturday to take some artistic shots. I'll share some with pain on my face, if I flinch that is;)

Not many tattoo photos on POTN:(

I am planing on doing a one year + journalism project on tattoo with the biker crew I hang with, inspired by a book I read awhile back. I was hoping get some further inspiration for, beyond the typically... "typical" stuff in Tat mags. The photos above are more like the feel I am looking forward to. So, thanks for sharing-- anyone have more?
