I'd agree with that. I shot a snooker competition over the weekend (really exciting stuff  ) but the killer shot came from an experiment long after I had the assignment shots were completed.

I was talking to a couple of the other photographers yesterday at MidOhio and they said for an extra $100 you can get the photopass. Can anyone else verify if that is accurate information.

Boom, turn one, I agree. There was an available window of about 3 degrees to shoot.

OTOH my best shots came from my 300 2.8.

It's not about what you shoot, it's about what you keep.

Regarding panning... you made a reference to "how many were keepers." Again, don't worry about how many are keepers. Worry about how many are killers! I'm quite comfortable panning at 1/100 sec - 1/125 sec. and would probably easily run 70% keeper rate. But why? I couldn't possibly use that many and they're not that interesting. I rarely panned over 1/60 sec all week. Once I've got "assignment" work out of the way, I want "wow" stuff.

Shoot a lot and shoot with reckless abandon.

Thanks for sharing your perspective. You're right, staying within my limits I got some sharp photos, but nothing 'special'. I did click off a few hundred at 1/60, and some came out OK(small print only). They were more interesting to look at than the sharper 1/150th images.

When I go for the bike race next week I think I'll follow your advice, and fire away, beyond my comfort level, and look for that couple of killer shots, instead of a bunch of keepers.

But...... you have to come help me sort through all my duds :)

Here are a couple of my 1/60th shots that came out pretty good:

I just saw your thread, while adding these, and wow. I guess I have to go even slower, but it'll be worth it if I get just a couple killers.

Thanks Chris.

This was my first time shooting at a track, maybe some one with experience can be of more value, but this is what I did.

I mostly shot in Tv. Depending on what effect I was looking for, slow shutter speeds for panning, to blur the background. And, fast SS for stopping action when a car spun off the track, or when I was shooting at on-coming cars.

I set EC according to the darkness of the background and/or the amount of reflection I was getting off the track. Most of the day I was at 0 or +1/3.

I set ISO to 200, but left it in auto-shift. It only went over 200 a few times when shooting in the shadows. When the sun was out I was getting apertures right around f/8, for pretty good DOF.

Nearly every shot was properly exposed, which was good since I was shooting JPG L.

I didn't bother with Manual mode, Because the sun was in/out of clouds(friday). Lighting was constantly changing, and I would have missed a lot of shots.

Glad you didn't listen to me, and leave the 300 home :)

I don't know about the photopass. All we found on the mid-ohio site was No Freelancers behind the fences. I'd gladly pay $100 to get back there for AMA races. Let me know if you find anything.

I know MidOhio used to do that a long time ago. If you find out anything I'd like to know too. I'll try to see if I can dig up info on it.

You need to submit a reference of work (portfolio, etc.) and have an acredited media source back you from what I recall to get a photo pass. I think they are in the $375 range for the pro races, but I could be wrong.

You're better bet for between the fences is the vintage race weekends and club meets at Mid-Ohio. From their getting an AMA or Pro-race credential should be easier...

...Mid-Ohio has great races all summer long, not just on the 2-3 pro race weekend.
