Hi,

A colleague of mine remarked the other day that the quality/build of lenses differs depending on where the lens is bought? Is this true? If so, what are the main differences? Surely as a global Brand the lenses would be the same or am i be naive? Your advice is needed as i am about to purchase an imported US 70-200 2.8L IS

Thanks
James

I would have thought that as all the lens are made in the same factory they would all be same? different packaging maybe, same goods.

mm, in the help section of the B&H site, they talk about the differences.

The sum total between Us and imported (grey market) is this: Who imports it.

The us ones are imported by canon, and onsold. The imported ones are imported by whoevers actually selling it.

Not certain about HK lenses, but i dare say that's probably where they're made.

James, I have bought four US imported lenses to date (from kerso1123@msn.com (external link)) and have had no problems at all with quality/build on any of them. With current exchange rates you save a fortune too! :D

Thanks for your words of wisdom guys.

As i mentioned before i would have though a brand like Canon would be quality where ever they made/sold their lenses. So it looks like a US one for me please, and a side of spare ££££'s

Bildeborg, does Kerso have a website/ebay ID that he sells the lenses with or do you think he would mind if i contact him directly?

I think this is very unlikely as they are all made in the same place by the same employees.

I think this type of remark might come from an official retailer who wants to ensure you buy from them instead of getting a "cheaper" import.

Assuming you get a Canon International Warranty Card, there should be no issues with getting a "grey" import.

I noticed that some of you mentioned importing from the US, as due to exchange rates at the moment, could be a bargain - but have you considered you're liable for Customs duty on these?
Anyone with any ideas /suggestions ?- as I'm thinking of doing likewise for a 100 -400.

I do know however that posted Items get checked at random, and on different days of the week, so you could get lucky / unlucky regarding Duty.

VAT/duty are taken care of by Ian, so no worries there. Contact him on the above link and ask for a price on the 100-400. You will be pleasantly surprised.

you must surely pay an import tax on the lens so how much are you really saving?

In the last 6 months i've bought Canon L lenses from UK(warehouse express.com), USA(kerso via Ebay) and Hong Kong(Kea-Photo via Ebay). They're all genuine Canon lenses and I'm pleased with all of them. I choose HK now as they offer the best deals and they only take 48 hours to get to the UK, also I don't pay any import duty.

Gear List: 1DMk3, 5D, 40D, 10D, 400D, 350D, 500mmL, 400mmL 5.6, 300mmL 2.8, 85mmL, 35mmL, 70-200mmL 2.8 IS, 24-70mmL, 16-35mmL MkII, 580EX II.

Which HK seller are you using, and do you have to initially pay the duty, then apply for a refund?
