After reading this thread and doing a bit more research, I decided this was my next purchase so I ordered one this afternoon. I can see this being my walkaround lens.

Now the long wait for shipping.

You will love it, especially since your going from that crappy kit lens to the 17-70, its superb at macro as well.

One of 2000 pics I took with my Sigma 17-70 while out West in Utah/Arizona/Nevada. I really had to shrink the picture size to fit. Hope the quality didn't suffer.

I just heard that Sigma are bringing out the 17-70 HSM, not sure if it will be this side of Christmas though as they took ages to release the 18-200OS, although I personally never had any gripes with the AF speed on my 17-70, it was able to track moving objects easily, HSM is probably more of a refinement, what they really should have put on it was the OS!

The 17-70 HSM is already available, but only for Nikon mounts.

If there is an HSM version of this lens, I will be trading my 24-70 no doubt.

And I doubt it will be available in Canon mount. Nikon requires HSM in order for any lens to work with the new D40x (or some model).

Yep I read the article again, Nikon at the moment, but if they can do it for Nikon mount then HSM on the Canon mount is only a matter of time as its kinda unfair to Canon users ;-)a

Yes I can confirm 100% that Sigma are about to announce the 17-70 HSM for Canon mount.

Looks like they are rolling it out across all their lenses slowly one by one.

Figures. I just bought one used less than a month ago. :( The only hangups I had were variable aperture and no HSM. Bummer.
