I usually don't like to take pictures of mallards anymore since there so common but I was testing out my new 300mm F2.8 IS to see if it was fast focusing and it seemed to work out quite well for birds. Taken towerd the evening. The light was great. Nice and warm.

Nice one Adam. All lenses are going to have a different sweet spot. They should all be tested when you get them, to find out what it is for your camera and lens combo. :)

Great shot. The lighting is wonderful and you have nice focus on this guy. Now, to critique his flying/landing style...I think he needs a little work!!

LOL David, yes, his landing wasn't very precise. Little heavy in the rear. Probably from to much bread from the locals. :)

I Had the 500mm F4.5L but I was affraid I would have a hard time getting it serviced since Canon doesn't work on them anymore. I figured the 300 would be a versital lens and could be used for other things as well.

I really liked the 500mm F4.5L and wish I never sold it. I sold it a couple months ago. I think I sold it for to little. I sold it for if I remember $2700 and now I see them going from anywhere from $3200 to $3400. I was just affraid about getting it serviced. I guess canon wants to try and force us to buy the F4 IS version. Trying to phase out the old 4.5 which is very sharp.

Other places will service them though. B&H is a Canon certified shop and I think they might do it. But that lens probably wouldn't need it. I think you sold it too cheap also. :)

I will probably pick up another one down the road. If I can find one. :)

I'm one of the few people that have no use for IS. I see it as a limitation, in more ways than one. It costs more, it uses battery power faster, it teaches you to be sloppy in your shooting, it adds at least double the time to find focus and worst of all, they are delicate and eventually wear out. I had one go bad and it was expensive to fix. ;)
