While sometimes you can bounce the flash (& use a bounce card or Omnibounce), and thereby negating the need for a flash...you are then dependant on there being a ceiling or wall nearby to bounce off of. You are also subject to a color cast if the surface isn't white or grey. I like using the bracket and not having to worry about it.
