I just got my 40D (felt like a kid on his birthday) and I immediately took some photos to compare the two cameras. It is a couple of photos all taken at ISO 1600 with the lens aperture wide open. Some with AWB and some manual cloudy set. Both cameras same shutter speed and both set on faithful (with the default settings on both). I used the Canon 28-105 f/3.5-4.5, Canon 100mm f/2.8, Canon 65mm f/2.8 and the Canon 50mm f/1.4 Please don't rate the photos I just wanted to compare ISO and color between the two. The first photo is always from the 5D when you put the mouse over the photo the 40D photo show.

Just a note: all photos were taken as jpeg, no raw was used. ;)

I think you are the first to show a test between between these two in any form so congrats and thanks.

First thing that struck me was WOW, the 1.6 crop really affects the image alot. Its harder to appreciate when you just see a red box showing the crop.

I don't know if its a fair comparison because of the crop but 40D sure does capture alot of detail there... Very encouraging.

From what I can tell the 40D looks pretty good noise wise tho the 5D is still the clear winner at these high ISO's (the rose background is a good example)

I can't wait to get my 40D :D

Thanx again,

E:¬D

Excellent work John, much appreciated.

On the CF card shots, the 40D seems to focus/be a lot sharper than the 5D. I doubt this is the DOF as it's shot at f5.6. Is the 40D sharper or am i seeing things?!

Great Tests John,

On the first CF shots the 40D looks way sharper (is the 5D focus spot on?)

However you cut it or pixel peep it the 40D looks pretty darn good!

The 5D looked OOF on that one. PQ wise, I liked the 5D's noise handling better. Since color and all can be adjusted, most everything else seems even to me.

Thanks Guys :)
I am glad you are enjoying it ;)

evandavies,
Thanks and yes I agree the 40D was/is very encouraging

S2000,
Share the popcorn ..... please.....

TeeTee,
All lenses are wide open, the specs are underneath the photos ex. the 100mm macro was used a f/2.8 :) (had to just check to make sure I didn't do a typo but it checked out good :) ). No you are not seeing things (at least I don't think you are  ) I am quite happy with the 40D it is really giving my 5D a run for the $$$$ (being 1/2 price, bigger screen, faster, live view and full iso displayed).

EOSAddict,
All photos were manually focused except the last one with the 50mm f/1.4 So it could be a bit off however it looked spot on ??? I agree it does look darn good :)

Those photos are not ideal to compare noise performance. Choose better pictures that show more shadow graduations. Also DON'T use the same lenses as doing so changes the perspective....put a 50mm on the 40D and 85mm on the full frame, for example.

Gear is essential, but often has little to do with composition, pictures, and art...Alfred Steiglitz

...Sweet jesus

It does a great job. There's good color range when all the pics are taken into consideration.

A 50mm on a 40D and a 85mm on 5D isn't going to affect noise

Yeah what he said.

Cuz heaven knows, I get less noise when I use my 70-200 than I do with my 24-70. And OMG you should see the sensor niblets on my 12-24! Don't even get me started on the variations in noise when I start to move around a room!

Thats exactly what I said when I read Steiglitz post. As I only have had the new camera about 1 hour when I made the page to do a quick comparison to my 5D.

Steiglitz,
Sorry it ain't good enough for you, what do you expect for free? ???

Jeez, what's wrong with this guy? To the Op, thanks for taking the time and effort in making that comparative test. It looks like the 40D is holding its own against the 5D here.

John_B,
Any thoughts about how the 40D compares to the 5D in terms of IQ, focus speed, etc?

My hat is off to you for taking the time to set it up, shoot it, then make the web page. I'm impressed with your results from the 40D. Just got mine this morning:)

So far so good. Haven't had much time to use it yet, but ISO 800 looks great, and 1600 looks usable.
