Well today there was the perfect example (at least to my eyes) of how live view can be really handy as an eye saver.

Blinding Orange

When I was reviewing the spec I at first thought DUH! I accidentally changed the metering mode (which didn't really matter as I already set the shutter, aperture, white balance and ISO in M mode) from spot to Evaluative. But No, apparently when using Live View on the 40D it automatically switches to Evaluative metering, go figure? ???

depending on what time this was taken and how bright the sun was, i'd say you almost damaged your sensor exposing it like this....
but it's a damn nice pic tho!

Desertraptor,
Thanks :)

muscleflex,
Ahh... No, I have taken hundreds of similar sun photos, some with a 1200mm lens and none of my CMOS sensors ever suffered from it. Although I have almost burned out my eyes a few times  but not anymore with live view

Nice shot John! Did you use the grid when you did this shot?

jdizzle,
Thanks, and no I didn't. In fact I haven't even tried the grid or magnification with it yet. Still learning all the new features :)

Ummmm - but previously, the sensor would only have been exposed to the magnified sun only during the actual exposure, but with liveview, it's exposed the whole time, isn't it? The strain your eyes were taking is now falling on the sensor.

I could be wrong, but I think you need to investigate this and be careful.

P.S. Maybe the IR filter will prevent a lot of the heating though.

The grid helps alot in composition.

Iv exposed several A series cameras to similar treatment, usually pointing them at a setting sun for half an hour or more.
Never seen any sign of damage to sensor from it.
Iv also taken plenty of sunset photos with my 30D, and never had any problems, other than blinding myself because it doesn't have live view

The sensor is a lot tougher than the human eye :)

xarqi,
Well yes, if you have it pointed at the sun using live view (or even not using live view) for long periods, damage could happen. However I used it for a couple of seconds for subject placement, not as a video to watch the sun.
Besides the manual says:

"If Live View shooting continues while the warning icon is displayed and the camera's internal temperature increases, the Live View shooting will stop automatically. Shooting will be disabled until the camera's internal temperature decreases."

I didn't see the high temperature icon displayed so it wasn't even long enough for the camera to warn me :)

great pic and this is a perfect example of why the liveview is a nice feature despite what some of the old school people think :)

No, just pointed a camera, with live view, at the sun for half an hour or more and taken several photos during that time. :)

Cool - I thought it was better to speak up, just in case it was an issue.
