Hey Everyone,

I just got my first Canon DSLR (5D) last week and have taken a few pics. I know normally it would have to involved the posting of duck shots, but I didn't see any at the location when I shot these pics. Usually there would be many ducks in the area during the day time. Anyways, here are some of my initial images taken with the 5D + 17-40mm. These were straight out of the camera, (JPG Large) with no post processing done. I only resized for the web. I must say that I'm very impressed with the 5D's image quality. :)

Congrats! Did you use a polarizer on those? Such deep vibrant colors. Also, Is that your camera bag in the first one?

Thanks for the compliments everyone!

No, I didn't use a polarizer for these. And yes, I just finally noticed my camera bag got stucked in the pic this morning. I really liked that pic. My intention was to shoot some test shots with the 5D for night shots. I wasn't expecting anything much, but like they said when you least expect it, the shots can be good.

Thanks Nick! Yes indeed. Coming from the D80 and D200 I can see a big difference. I've always love the colors Canon produces from numerous online galleries that I've visited. Every time when I see an image that looks stunning (Landscapes), I scroll down to read the specs and sure enough, about 95% came from the 5D. The rest either came from XT, XTi, 20D or 30D, but generally it's from Canon. There's just something about the 5D's images that sets it apart as some people have pointed it out on this forum. I'm glad I got it and it has now motivated me even more to go out and shoot.

Same here, this is exactly what I find too, its actually made me want to go out & do even more shots than I normally would :D

Wow sharp pictures. Are you using a L lens? No photoshop enahancements? Was a tripod used?

Will I get good quality pictures like this on my XTI?

NO, you should have purchased a 5D :p just kidding!

There is a certain look you only get with the 5D, like he was saying in his post, using an L lens on your XTI will help your images a lot, they usually have great focus accuracy which helps with sharpness as the focus is reallly bang on target & generally the contrast & overall "Pop" is better.

Remember the best gear in the wrong hands can produce crap images, as usual spot on exposure & great composition makes all the difference.

I see... so 5D is a totally different class. I though all SLR's are pretty much the same and it's what the lens that gives you the quality of the pic. In this case I see a big difference with the 5D camera.

Can I acheive the same results with a 40D? I was thinking of upgrading my XTI to a 40D. Good choice?

I love my 5D, but don't get caught thinking you need one to take great images. Some of my best shots are from my Rebel XT which is a step below your XTi. If you want great images, learn about exposure, composition, how to use artificial and natural light and then if you feel like your equipment is somehow holding you back then it is time to upgrade. Exercise the creative part of your brain, it will do more for you than any new camera ever could.

I'm taking pictures of everything, so go ahead and take this place away from me.

Some will say you can get near 5D quality with the 40D, while there are also others that have tried the 40D & say its nothing more than a 30D with a few extras.

I would suggest you try the 5D (if you can afford it) to see for yourself.

Remember the 5D & 40D are completely different, one being full frame, the other a cropped body the same as your 400D (XTI), they require a different strategy when deciding what lenses to buy, as a 50mm f/1.4 is far better on the 5D than it is on the 40D (so I hear) as you already know a 50mm is also more like 80mm on the 40D, so you can see for wideangle you have to purchase even wider lenses than what you do for a 5D.

Its really down to what you shoot the most, for landscapes most people will agree the 5D is king, or at least those that have tried it will, some will say you can get away with a 10-22 on a cropped body but ive been there & its not quite as enjoyable, seeing a wide scene through a smaller viewfinder isnt great if your using the camera all day.

Personally if I were you I would buy better glass, I dont know what you use now but your 400D (XTI) is a very good camera & from what I have seen on comparisons between the 400D & 40D there isnt a major difference, it might just be a case of needing to perfect your own talent a little further before blaiming the gear, I hope that doesnt offend you by me saying that, im not trying to down your own skills, what would I know!
