Thank you guys. I do have a budget of only $1600 and while I do like the size and feel of new 40D - it all comes down to lenses. I'll get XTi body and have about $1000 to spend on lenses. I shoot primarily wedding and I want to get into macro photography. Some of you were right, lenses are a long term investment, while cameara body change every so often.

But I already have quality glass. In hindsight the xti is a great deal, considering its image quality is on par with the 40d. I think with your budget, going with the xti and better lens is the way to go. Although I love the features and feel of the 40d, the xti for half the price can't be beat. Ken

I decided to bite the bullet and got 40D with Canon 28-138mm. I sold my XTi to my co-worker. I love the camera. It's heavier - but much more comfortable in hands. I never saw anyone mention its white balance capabilities. I shot a wedding with my XTi prior to purchasing 40D and most of the pictures inside the building were with red tint. I know I could've set custom white balance, but I didn't and white balance on all of my pictures was off. When I got 40D - I took some pictures inside my house where I knew it would give me yellow tint (with my XTi) - but all the pictures I took with 40D were right on the dot. White balance was Perfect!!!!

Jan 29, 2010 04:21 | #23 from that side by side test. it looks like the 40D comes out sharper than the XTi. i have the Xti and there are a number of things i dont like. my friends 40D has MUCH better color in all of his images everytime. i have to edit more in post to get my photos to his quality and res. the XTi takes good images but they are not the same. i can usually spot images taken with the 40D because of the color and sharpness. its really a price thing though. i went with the XTi for its amazing price. you do get a little more than what you paid for honestly. but the 40D is worth the money now that ive been able to try one out. the viewfinder is something i would appreciate after using the small dark XTi view for so long.

The 40D is much more bright and colourful, whereas the 400D is more subdued and cool...if that makes sense? Wedding Photography Melbourne

Jan 29, 2010 13:15 | #27 I own both cameras. The XTi was my first for about 2 years before I bought the 40D. Since I bought the 40D I never use the XTi except as a seconds camera where I need 2 lenses and don't have time to swap. Oh ya, once at a wedding my 40D crapped out, and I had to finish with the XTi (it did fine).
