XTi and put the difference toward some lenses. Bodies come and go in and out of fashion/favor. Good glass is a long term investment!

Thank you guys. I do have a budget of only $1600 and while I do like the size and feel of new 40D - it all comes down to lenses. I'll get XTi body and have about $1000 to spend on lenses. I shoot primarily wedding and I want to get into macro photography. Some of you were right, lenses are a long term investment, while cameara body change every so often.

Thanks for all the great feedback.

I got the 40D because I shoot a ton of sports and I need the higher fps and also the high iso.

3 fps compared to 6.5 fps is so far apart lol I never knew what a difference there was, or that 3 frames would really make that big of a difference

i know this is an old thread but i stumbled upon a 40d vs xti side by side on dpreview. im glad i didnt go for the 40d and its 2x pricetag.

sure its bigger, but my xti and grip does just fine in my (large) hands.
sure its built better, but i dont plan on dropping my camera.
i dont need 6+ fps, although it would be nice.
i dont need iso 3200.
and i dont need 1/8000 shutter.

that said, i'm very satisfied.

Hi, I have the 40d now, sold the xti. To me it came down to the ergonomics of the 40d over the xti. But I already have quality glass. In hindsight the xti is a great deal, considering its image quality is on par with the 40d. I think with your budget, going with the xti and better lens is the way to go. Although I love the features and feel of the 40d, the xti for half the price can't be beat.

I decided to bite the bullet and got 40D with Canon 28-138mm. I sold my XTi to my co-worker. I love the camera. It's heavier - but much more comfortable in hands. I never saw anyone mention its white balance capabilities. I shot a wedding with my XTi prior to purchasing 40D and most of the pictures inside the building were with red tint. I know I could've set custom white balance, but I didn't and white balance on all of my pictures was off. When I got 40D - I took some pictures inside my house where I knew it would give me yellow tint (with my XTi) - but all the pictures I took with 40D were right on the dot. White balance was Perfect!!!!

I tried putting 28-135mm 72mm diameter lens on XTi and it's just not the same...

By the way... I also bought Canon 50mm 1.4 and Kenko Extension tubes. So now I have good portrait lens, every day lens and with Kenko tubes I also converted my regular lens to macro lens. Plus, I figured I can always borrow some of my friend's glass when I want to... two of my buddies have some very nice ones.

So, at the end - I'm very, very happy with my new 40D. Thanks everyone for great feedback...

from that side by side test. it looks like the 40D comes out sharper than the XTi. i have the Xti and there are a number of things i dont like. my friends 40D has MUCH better color in all of his images everytime. i have to edit more in post to get my photos to his quality and res. the XTi takes good images but they are not the same. i can usually spot images taken with the 40D because of the color and sharpness. its really a price thing though. i went with the XTi for its amazing price. you do get a little more than what you paid for honestly. but the 40D is worth the money now that ive been able to try one out. the viewfinder is something i would appreciate after using the small dark XTi view for so long.

These 2 cameras have very different looks due to their differing tonal curves. The 40D is much more bright and colourful, whereas the 400D is more subdued and cool...if that makes sense?

The 400D is as clean, if not cleaner than the 40D up to ISO 800. At ISO 1600, the 40D is cleaner. At ISO 3200 the 40D is useable (barely) whilst the 400D is barely unusable (about 2/3 stops difference)

I own both cameras. The XTi was my first for about 2 years before I bought the 40D. Since I bought the 40D I never use the XTi except as a seconds camera where I need 2 lenses and don't have time to swap. Oh ya, once at a wedding my 40D crapped out, and I had to finish with the XTi (it did fine).
The 40D is a superior camera to the XTi.
The XTi feels like a toy after I got used to the 40. Also, I thought I would miss the controls on the XTi, but I was very wrong. The 40 beats the XTi on that one too. Other advantages: better AF, larger LCD, 6 FPS..........nuf said.

Get the 40D as the controls are more suited to DSLR shooting. This is a different world, not a Point-N-Shoot world. Just get a G11 if you want a small camera.
