pat - I was traveling on a Macau-to-HK jetfoil, and the one in the picture is going at the opposite direction towards Macau. So, about 100MPH speed differential between us, and through the windows.

I work at Boeing and it's been a long time since we built hydrofoils like these. Interestingly, I was just talking about it with someone the other day. I didn't realize any were still in service.

So you spent a day in Macau, when? I was born there but I immigrated to Australia over 19 years ago. Not the Macau I use to know though...:(

Looks like a typical foggy, misty day in that area..not brilliant for phtography I suppose :)

sparksdjs - Turbojet (used to be Far East Hydrofoil) is the largest operator of the Boeing 929s. Right now they operate 14 of them, plus a Chinese PS-30 built under license from Boeing. Japan and South Korea also have some Jetfoils (including the other PS-30), including a route between the two countries.

Souwalker - I grew up in Hong Kong, and still visit often. I like to spend a night over in Macau everytime and visit some of the restored historical sites and churches. I don't gamble.

Here are some pictures of Macau I took in recent years:

12/04, using a compact Nikon 3700 (neat little 3.1MP camera, but lots of barrel distortion at the wide end):

Nice shots of Macau. Did you use tripod? Are they real blue skies? the last time I was back in macau over 4 yesrs ago, I hardly saw any blue skies and most of the time it's grey. Coming from Australia where the blue sky is stunning, it's depressing....

I am acutually going to Macau for xmas this year for 2 weeks. I am going back kicking and screaming as not too happy to. Wife says either go or divorce so I am under duress :D

Anyway, i hope to to get some nice historical picture while i am there.

My wife has a 70-300mm and thinks its great. She has taken some cracking photos with it. However she has a new 70-200 f/4 IS in the post.

There is another thread on this site that has asked people to post their best shots with their worst lens and lots have posted amazing shots with what is slated as poor glass. I once got very disheartened when I compared a 17-55 16-35L 17-85 and a cheap olympus compact with the same frame in my garden on a nice day and asked my daughter if she could tell the difference, when she was adement that there was no difference I was in a bad mood wondering why on earth id spent so much money when the compact did fine.

I have cheered up a lot since then knowing that its not all about IQ with good light. Its about how a lens and camera perform together in all sorts of variations. The bottom line is that you get what you pay for, know what you want from a lens and how much you can justify the cost to yourself.

My wife and I spent a day a few weeks ago shooting fast jets at a busy air base on a fairly dull day. She was not so happy to see how many keepers I had produced with my 70-200 f/2.8 compared to her 70-300. However there has been many a nice well lit day we have been out together and to be honest there is very little difference between the two lenses. For me the extra cost and weight of the 2.8 was worth it but to many including my wife is not. She has bought the 70-200 f/4 IS not because she is not happy with the image quality of the 70-300 but it is slightly faster and focuses better along with better build quality. She wouldnt entertain the 2.8 as it is too heavy for her.

I agree the weakest spot of this lens are the AF (and built quality). It's not fast enought. But for slow action or static subject, i'm amaze of the picture quality even at f5.6. I buy this lens to complement my 400mm f5.6 as a walk around wildlife lens, and don't regret it.
sample shot at 300mm f5.6 ISO 800

Dumb question - what does 100% crop mean ?
picture was centered and cropped ?

It just means the picture was blown up to 100% view (actual pixel size) and then cropped.

Looks like it's coming down in price: I saw one used on craigslist for $475. That's the first time I've seen it at a price equal to a used 70-200 f/4.

I bought this lens in Aug and haven't regretted it. Most of my pics are taken with this lens.

I thought I would resurrect this post since I plan on buying one soon. Anyone get one of these lenses lately?
