I had a shoot yesterday and I let Lexi come and work as my assistant. It was a Mom, Dad, and baby. She did a great job with the baby. Better than I could have done alone. It's very cool watching her help me with something I love to do.

Here are a couple of snaps I took of my little girl "working" with me :)

Thanks for looking. Comments welcome.

Pretty daughter. :) How old is she?

the second shot is awesome... did you use a fill-flash or reflector? I'm guessing she'll be working on both ends of the camera someday.

Thanks for the comments. She is nine. About 99% of my threads are her :)

She is an artist at heart. I think she will end up doing something creative someday.

I use flash. I have tried reflectors but I rarely shoot with an assistant so I rely on flash and natural light. She did well, I plan on using her more to help so a reflector is in my future...

Yea im loving the glow of that light from backlighting. You had to have used a fill flash on it. :) That or done an HDR and somehow gotten her to stay statue still.

**EDIT**
took too long to write and you beat me to the next response. :p

Sam, that second shot is awesome. I love how the backlight forms the rim around her. Was that planned or a nice suprise? She looks like she is growing up and is a wonderful assistant.

Hi Mike!

Thanks, The second shot I asked her to sit there so I could check the light. The first one was from the hip really.

She was leaning against the fence while we waited for the light to drop down a little. She looked so cute and bored. I didn't get it in the shot but I like it anyway. No color in it really though, just a proud papa shot.

Yup, that second one is terrific with the backlight. She makes a very cute assistant. I hope you are compensating her well.

If anyone is interested here are some of her shots.

Titus, I told her she did a good job and I would pay her 10% from now on. Pretty good for a nine year old I think.

She took 76 shots. I told her she needed to take at least one keeper for every ten shots. She ended up with thirteen that she liked. I thought all thirteen were worth printing.

Wow love the daughter's exposures. At least we know where she gets her talent from. Looks like you'll be buying new equipment!

Practice, practice, and practice some more, and when you think you have got it right, start over.

Pshh. Compos are still there. But yea, I really love P mode. I use manual the most but P mode is good for those quick shots where you want control still.

Not sure what you mean. We have her shooting in P because she gets mad when the flash pops up when she doesn't want it to. Green box decides for her when to flash and not. She did well through the day popping it up when she needed it.

When she gets a little better I am going to let her start with AV and TV modes. She has a basic understanding of the rule of thirds and how shadows and light effects the shot. Next is depth of field and stopping/showing motion. She has years and years to practice, no rush.

Im saying she knows her compositional style very well. And that P mode is a good mode to learn on since it gives you some control over the exposure while still helping you out: you pick exposure and then camera decides settings.

I personally use manual all the time for maximum control, but when I need to be able to quickly switch between different kinds of lighting settings and dont have time to keep changing settings, P mode for me is a good quick alternative.
