Noise reduction assistance is needed, Please!!!!

Hi. I shot a train today, and need to print it. However, PS Elements 5.0 does NOT have the NR I need on this, and I was hoping that there are some kind souls out here on the best Photo Forum, who can help me!!!!!

The photo DOES need cropping, and a little straightening, I know, but if someone can do the NR, first, I would greatly appreciate it!!!!!!! Or, if it is BETTER to crop and straighten first, let me know that, as well!!! then I will re-post for NR...

(PS. I am working on buying a plug in program, once I can figure out if I want Noise Ninja, NoiseWare or NeatImage. So, any suggestions would help, too!!!!

I don't see any noise problems at this size, what I see is a dirty sensor. Use the healing brush or spot tool in PS to get rid of them. Use the ruler tool and rotation if you want it straight.

I understand that. the sensor crud was not what I was asking help with.

Please see the newly cropped, dirty sensor crud removed and straightened version!!!!

When it is enlarged, it is noisy to me.. And this WILL need to be enlarged..

OK. How do i post a link to a larger version? I use Photobucket. Or is Flickr better at maintaining size??? (I just started using Flickr)

I did download the so-called free trials, but when you hit OK, you get grids all over the photo!!!! Most unattractive!!!!!!

I personally prefer to leave the noise, as noise reduction is also detail reduction. If anything i'd mask off areas of solid color and just do NR there.

Yeah, I can understand that. But when I enlarge it, it just seems tooo noisy, and from what was done, not too much detail gone. It is for a calendar, so it will be bigger; so the less grain, the better!!!!!

Noiseware/Pro, but with custom settings. No matter what you choose, you'll eventually want to control it as Tim points out.

Only the train and sky ended up with NR, and the photo was a touch soft, so it also got a layer with emboss to sharpen it and just a very slight burn on a couple of parts.

When you get deep into it, go back to this photo someday, hit the whole thing with noise reduction, then look at what happens to the railbed at left, in the shadows.......... then you'll see exactly what Tim's talking about very clearly.

The EXIF data indicates:
Shutter = 1/320 second
Aperture - f/29
ISO = 1600
Lens FL = 22 mm

I am intrigued by these values because:

1. The f/stop is very critical for sensor spots to show up,

2. f/29 will definitely result in degradation due to diffraction,

3. ISO 1600, will not help the noise issue,

4. With a focal length of 22 mm, at f/8, and this lens focused at 14 feet, everything from 6.00 feet to infinity would be in focus.

5. At f/8 (less than four stops from f/29, and ISO 100 (four stops from 1600), the same shutter speed could be used, and this combination would would yield good DOF, movement control, and eliminate dust and noise.

Thank you for that info. I am still learning on the proper f stops, ( and obviously did a lousy job on this one!!!!) and such, so to have a flow chart likes yours, is very helpful and appreciated!!!

I have a hard time going between the AV and the TV ad when to know when to use which one!!!!
