Ive got a Tamron AF 75-300mm f4-5.6 I got it for like $150. I wanted a cheap zoom to start playing with before I went with an L. I was wondering if anyone knew if the canon 1.4x or 2x extender would fit on the Tamron lens. I have a 30d body.

The canon ones will probably not fit... a kenko dg pro 300 will. AF will be very very very tricky if it works at all. Image quality will be poor if you use manual focus and nail the shot. I'd pass and be happy with the 300mm reach that you have now.

Same thoughts as sirsloop. Likely best to avoid that route.

I went to Calumet Photo in Chicago last week to get a TC 1.4. I tried both the Canon and the Tamron SP AF 1.4. they both worked perfectly on my 70-200 f4L. I asked about the Kenko and the sales guy did not recommend it. I also asked about using the Tammy 1.4 on either of my Tammy lenses,18-250, and the 17-50 2.8. They also said that combo was not recommended either.

I ended up with the Tammy and am quit happy with the results on the 70-200 f4L.
I will try the 1.4 tc with the 18-250 here in a little bit and get back and let you know if it works.

Interesting that he recommended against the Kenko, since the Kenko 300 is the exact same TC as the Tamron SP. They're identical except for color.

I just tried the Tamron SP AF 1.4 TC with the Tamron 17-50 f2.8, it worked just fine as far auto focus, and seemed fine for clarity, although I did not download to the computer, just looked at the camera.

I also tried it on the Tammy 18-250 seemed to work just fine as well. I does take more light as you would expect at 5.6, but with enough light it aotufocused just fine and seemed sharp as well. I will look more closely at the shots later as I have to go to work now...

Maybe they did not carry it...

Problem is this is a TC that will be used on a 70-300/4-5.6 lens... not a 70-200/4L. You can get away with a TC on the L lens but not the 70-300. The aperture reports f/8 and AF goes south. Also, I'm almost positive the Canon TC will not even fit because the element protrudes from the TC. It will hit the rear element in the 70-300. The lenses that the Canon TC work with have recessed rear elements just for this reason.

The kenko is a fine TC too.. I've used one on my 70-200/2.8L for years and have been getting GREAT RESULTS using it. The only thing it doesn't offer is the weather sealing that the EF1.4II has.
