I use portrait mode a little soft on the 40D, shot in jpeg, ISO 100, 1/80, 5.6, tried to use the flash as fill flash.... my settings usually would be no where near this, but I just did what I could to get an ok pic.....typically I shoot more ISO 320 and much faster shutter speed, but I am not a portrait guy..... I took about 15 pictures this late afternoon and got a handful of keepers... I cropped them to look a bit better....

The background is a bit dark, but I don't have photoshop or any of that kinda stuff yet....I do not shoot in Raw often....somthing I am going to change...

I think if we had shot in better light or if I were a "strobist" then the lighitng would be a bit more "on".....

As nicely exposed as your fiancee is (and believe me, you nailed that with no real hotspots), I think the visible portions of the background are just a little bit dark. I think a slight bump up for the ambient exposure and/or a little decrease in the power of the flash would have made this really shine. You do also have some harsh under-chin shadowing that a reflector could have softened.

I am going to show my lack of knowledge here...the reflectors [the round discs]....is there a way to mount those on a stand or somthing???.... or would we need a person holding it? Second thank you for the CC.

Reflectors can be mounted on a stand/bracket, but it is convenient if you have somebody around to hold it for you. Keep in mind that the reflector wouldn't eliminate all the shadow under your subject's chin in a photo like that because so much more light would be hitting directly and flatly than would be hitting the reflector and bouncing under the chin as fill. It would be an improvement, no doubt, but not a huge one. I think a wiser investment would be an umbrella or softbox with stand; there should be plenty of threads about single flash setups in the lighting board; have a look there for ideas.

If you're really thrifty, by the way, you may consider making an umbrella of softbox (I'm in that process right now, actually) to fulfill these needs.

Here is a glimpse of her in everyday life...IE not all done up..... This is inside of an old fort in Massac, IL at a festival. There is no light/electricity inside the fort. This was taken before I got the flash and with the kit lens.... The pic is underexposed, but it was handheld so I did not have much option...I always try to capture her in her everyday look when we go on our little adventures together....

the camera she is using is my old pentax IST DL....

The only light in the room came from about 6-8 of the little square musket holes she is standing by....

enjoy!!
