I ALWAYS have the hood on if it's out of the bag. If I end out in a severe environment, i.e. blowing sand or water I would put one on for protection. (that didn't sound right !:lol "If you're not living on the edge. You're taking up too much room !"

This pretty well sums it up for me. If I spend $1000 or more on an L lens It seems like spending 5-10% more for a good filter is cheap insurance. There certainly are instances where I'll remove the filter for shooting but it stays on otherwise. I'd rather protect my glass from dust, scratches and fingermarks than worry about having to unscrew a filter once in a while! Elton Balch
