Since there hasn't been a poll yet....let's find out how many members
use/don't use protection filters on their lenses.

There are very few instances that I don't use them, and lots of instances that I wouldn't even think about not having one!

Used to, but after aquiring a few new lenses, the costs of getting high quality UV's for them all started to add up. The more I read about them, the more I was inclined to go without.

Use a hood and if your not shooting, put the lens cap back on.

That's what I do.

I use one on my Canon 10-22 - The hoods pretty useless and the front element is rather close to the front.

I own a couple, but rarely use them. I ALWAYS have the hood on if it's out of the bag. If I end out in a severe environment, i.e. blowing sand or water I would put one on for protection. (that didn't sound right !)

You should have had a 3rd option for those who only use them under extreme conditions, i.e. blowing sand, etc...

I have one on all of my lenses and only take them off if switching to a polarizing filter.

Yes, there should have been this 3rd option.

I only use a protection filter for harsh conditions but always use a lens hood.

This pretty well sums it up for me. If I spend $1000 or more on an L lens It seems like spending 5-10% more for a good filter is cheap insurance. There certainly are instances where I'll remove the filter for shooting but it stays on otherwise. I'd rather protect my glass from dust, scratches and fingermarks than worry about having to unscrew a filter once in a while!

I always do, for me I think any degradation in IQ is negligible. That being said, I always opt for the B+W MRC filters.
