1ST attempt at skin smoothening

Hello,

I have been very impressed impressed with the smoothing techniques out there, and frankly, have been intimidated by some of them!

However, I bit the almighty bullet, and gave it a try. I used this technique,

I have NEVER attempted smoothing out skin, and I know I have some more work to do, but here are my very first attempts!

Before, #1:

Personally I think both photos are overdone, and the top one looks very orange. I think that it's hard to do this kind of thing with a snapshot like these. I think this girl doesn't need skin smoothing in these photos. You have a couple of blemishes to take out but that's it.. I think her skin looks pretty good as is.. I would find a photo that shows pores/etc up close, because that's where you really NEED skin smoothing. If you haven't taken one yourself, you can usually find plenty on deviantart.com or other such sites.

Thanks for the comments!! I will keep at it. Like I said, first try, so I certainly don't expect perfection!!! LOL!!

I see what you mean about the orange-y look. I didn't even notice that before- I was just happy that I gave it a go, and it kinda-sorta worked for me!!!!

Wow. I dunno if you know the OP and/or her daughter personally or something, but that comes across as incredibly inappropriate to me and seems to be a clear violation of the forum rules.

Haha no worries. I know her semi-personally. The fact that I know she is underage should tell ya something. She'll send me a scathing PM if it's a problem!

I really don't think that should matter, but I'm obviously new here. I'll leave the issue.

Your daughter seems to be blessed with beautiful skin so I don't believe it was really needed in the first place.
Good first attempt though.

I think the skin looks nicer on the second one and it doesn't look photoshopped.

And I thought the 2nd one was tooo smooth, especially around the nose area.

I did use the opacity tool more on the 1st one, and lost it on the 2nd one!!!

I need to figure out how to select, and deselect areas better.
The magic wand is great, but it goes where IT wants to go, and not necessarily where I want to go!!

I also hear folks talking about MASK layers. Haven't found out what exactly that is, but I am sure I will..!!! :o

I don't think your subject needs the skin smoothening. I personally like the more natural look (as long as the subject naturally has great skin as such) So I think you need to find someone with a more rough face then correct it. these are fine in the before. BTW beautiful daughter, hope Dad has a shotgun near the door JK!

I don't think she needs it either, but a tiny bit doesn't hurt. For something like a freckle, I knock them down about 60%. Same for an older persons wrinkles, or maybe 75% if I think that works.
I'd like to see her eyes sharp, though.
