Where did you hear that Luke? I think it's fairly obvious the car just veered of in a a fairly straight trajectory. Oh and Dave, are you one of the types that believes 9/11 was an inside job? I'm sorry, but some of the political claims seem simply untrue. Conspiracy theories, which what you've stated very indeed are, can get blown out of proportion quick, and most of what you said can be very easily made up (not necessarily by you, but where you got the information perhaps.)

Yes I would of. And I know my F1. His first race win was at Portugal and he won at Imola 3 times if my memory serves me right. I know that the lower to the ground the cars go faster and that the skid pans and so on help create downforce. If the steering broke, how come he was able to apply opposite lock and then turn to the left again?

My bad, yes, his first win was at Estoril. I am getting old and forgetful aren't I? His 2nd win was at Imola if memory serves me correct ;)

We don't know what Senna did visually, as the onboard FISA camera cut out just at the right time. Many people believe that the onboard video footage of Senna's last moments exists, and was deliberately destroyed by FISA to hide the proof. They didn't want a lawsuit from the Da Silva family.

The Renault engine blackbox did not record steering input, and the black box for the car was physically destroyed, so there is no way of telling if he applied opposite lock or not. Even if he did, his trajectory went STRAIGHT off the track. Opposite lock would have had the rear end of the car throwing out, don't you think?

Ves - off topic is 9/11. PM me if you want to discuss my personal thoughts on 9/11.

picturecrazy - many others here have spoken of their memories of that era of F1, due to seeing these images. I'm simply reliving mine, just as others have.

Thanks for the kind words folks. To answer a few questions, in no particular order. How many photos do I have? Somewhere around 20,000 slides spanning the era 1976 until 2001. I have F1, IMSA, Champ Car, Can-Am, SCCA and a lot of vintage racing. Almost all were shot in So. California. The shot of deAngelis in the Lotus was scanned by a service probably using a Nikon slide scanner. All the rest were scanned with my Canon Canoscan 9950F, which is a flat bed scanner with masks for various film sizes and works very well. Most of my stuff is in storage at the moment, I only have about 10% on hand at the moment.

Here are a few more from Long Beach.

Just a short comment and not to stir the pot any further. I am a bit of a student of automotive and racing history and I can tell you that politics and intrigue have been a part of auto racing almost since the beginning. There are incidents in history that make the recent "Stepneygate" look like kid stuff.

Cheers,
Kurt O.

It was on some tv show. Can't remember what one though. They said he corrected the slide and turned left again while applying the breaks.

The live video cameras on the cars back were unreliable even up until recently as they were analog. They would cut out because of trees/buildings/even sponsor signs as the footage was beamed from the car to a helicopter back to the director and then broadcasted. Its like onboards of Monza in 03. Half the track had missing footage from onboard the cars because of the trees.

20,000??:shock: Great pics of Villeneuve there. Your one lucky guy :)

Looking at footage its vey hard to assertain if he did apply some opposite lock unles you have seen close up footage. I have looked at various footage from the TV companies but most were too far away.

Excellent shots of Gilles Kurt - he's another of my faves, although not from my era (only just).

The scanners have done an excellent job of things! Did you do any PP, or just scan?

What did you use to take these shots (gearwise)?

Thanks again for these memorable images - back when F1 was the real thing. FIA tried to copy several aspects of Indycar and I firmly believe that they ballsed it all up. Max Mosley has not been good for the sport imho.

This would have all been solved if the black box from the Williams had been preserved. As I said earlier, the FIA official who removed the black box from the Williams in the parc ferme, at the request of Bernie Ecclestone, testified under oath that it was not physically damaged at all when he removed it from the Williams. Williams says it was - who's lying? A FIA official who has no reason to lie, or a team that cocked up a car, causing a drivers death? I know what I'd put my money on and I ain't a betting man. And, as I said earlier, removal of the black box was clearly against the FISA rules - it was MEANT to stay in the car, untouched by anyone, and given to the police authorities to investigate in a forensic manner.

Thanks Dave,

Gilles was always one of my favorites as well. I was able to have him autograph a print of one of my photos and it's one of my prize possessions. I did very little PP on the scans, mainly a little cropping, slight color adjustment and dust speck removal. Kodachrome holds up very well. Back then I used an Olympus OM-1 and an OM-2n with Vivitar Series 1 lenses. I bought a Canon EOS1 in 1991 and an A2 about a year later and L Series lenses (yes, there is a difference!). I do have 20,000 slides, almost all cars, but, They are not all as good as the ones I've shown. I basically kept everything that was reasonably in focus. I bought a 30D about 18 months ago and I'm still coming to grips with digital.

I completely agree about modern F1, although I still watch it.

One more from the good old days...

Thanks Kurt, Dave others. Brings back some really great memories. Then makes me mad about losing the Vancouver Cart Series.

Fantastico! Isn't it great to see some brilliant drivers like Stefan Bellof and Derek Warwick (it was sad to see Senna veto him in 1986 from joining the legendary team Lotus).

And thank you for the images of my idol I'd be interested in getting some prints done of the Senna images over the next few months if possible (currently upgrading my PC and getting ADSL are my priorities). Drop me a PM if that's a possibility.
