Anyone "upgrade" from a G6 to G9?

Being a proud former owner of a G6, I was considering purchasing a used G6 because I miss having a smaller RAW-shooting camera on hand. I'm not too impressed with the reviews of the G7/G9 especially with it lacking a fast lens, vari-angle screen and SLR-type grip.

Have any of you upgraded from the G6 to the G9? If so then what real world advantages does the G9 give over the G6?

Well you have already established what you believe you would gain by staying with the G6 so as far as what you would gain by moving to a G9?
Maybe I shouldn't chime in because I didn't have a G6, just DSLR's, but if I were to guess I would say the biggest gain would be a potential for better prints at low ISO. A 12mp ISO-80 G9 image printed at 16x20 versus a lowest iso setting G6 picture printed at 16x20, I suspect would be an obvious difference. Considering both cameras have very low noise at these settings, both have good glass, etc.. but the G6 would have 40% less data in the 7MP versus the 12MP. So when we start talking about print sizes over 8x10, in my experience this is when tripods, Image stabilization and Megapixels start making a whole lot of sense.

Just my opinion though...

A big factor to me is the fact the G9 is so much smaller/compact. I can't even fit my G6 in a big pocket from my winter jacket. This means I often do have my camera with me as much as I would like.

I have a G6 and I've messed around with the G9 a little. I like the size/shape of the G9 better, but there's a lot about the G6 I like more (I love the swivel screen and faster lens, and from what I can tell, the battery life is better, plus I'm just used to it and all the functions are second nature). Given the choice if both were similarly priced and on the market, I'd probably go with the G6, but considering a used G6 isn't much cheaper than a new G9 and the odds of finding a reasonably-priced NIB G6 with a warranty and all that, I'd go with the G9 just because I'd feel more comfortable buying a new, current camera.

Yeah, it would really be nice to have the G6 glass for sure, swivel screen I can do without, and as far as battery life I suspect that if you run the G9 at 5 or 8 megapixels it will run pretty similar numbers to the G6, remember it's got to store 40% more info on the card with every shot... Regardless of whether the camera takes 250 or 300 shots I think that if I thought it would be close I would bring an extra battery,,, surely 500-600 pics is plenty for most days out!!

Is it safe to assume that a used G6 has shot boatloads of photos? Enthusiasts tend to shoot more pictures than Aunt Sally with her Kodak at the occasional family gathering.

I have both the G6 and the G9.

Leaving aside personal preferences about handling, ergonomics, the G9 is better in the following ways:
1/ Lag is reduced
2/ A lot more resolution
3/ Better size / fits easily in pocket
4/ Black

Losing the twisty LCD screen really doesnt affect my life any.

Vkalia pretty much summed up the advantages that will sway me towards the G9. I found that the G6 lagged a bit especially being so spoiled by SLRs. The G6 was also not pocketable even with cargo shorts :D.

I guess the shortcomings of the G9 can be worked around. The G6 had them as well and I adjusted to it after a while.

I feel the same way now considering I've never purchased electronics second-hand. The new-ness factor wins me over.

I would be concerned too about a used G6 at this point, it is probably very used and there's really no telling when it will finally go. I would speculate that a G9 will last me until a camera I like more comes out in the future, probably 2-3 years from now... I can't say that with a lot of confidence about any used compact.
