I cant pretend to have much insight into what newspaper editors may look for in a portfolio but you have many very fine images in your collection.
Very Nice..

Look like all great shots. Love the wine in glass shot.I would group the shots together by topic though IMO.

Lovely shots Michael. The only critique I can give to you would be get more images up there! :) Obviously you don't want to throw just anything up there but I find that one page just ain't enough.

Also, on the second page, although its a nice shot, the soccer shot just doesn't cut it as far as the rest of your work on there goes.

I really enjoyed looking at your fire fighter shots. Post more of those!

I'd recommend axing two photos and having a single page of images ... or add some to create two full pages. Seems odd to only have 2 photos on page 2.

Put the wine shot on page one, front and center!

Do you need some sort of statement about you and your photography? Seems a bit bare-boned.

If I were a newspaper editor, the fire department shots are the only ones that would interest me. The others show off photographic skills, but not news.

Not sure I agree with this. The major newspapers I read also have Entertainment, Food & Wine, Business and Sports sections. Not everything in a newspaper is actually depressing :)

My vote for deletion would be: Rancho_Hills_06_1 and Ringdrop_Classproject_06_1 (Too artsy)

Not sure what the 'local paper' is but why not send them to a 'national'. I think they might be interested in what you could contribute in photojournalistic coverage of events in your area. If you are paying the bills with your camera then, yes ..you need the local support as well, but you do have a talent and expertise that is definately bigger than Smallville.

Why don't you send it to an actual paper editor for comment. haven't met one yet that didn't have an opinion on everything. Might cost you a coffee.

I agree with the comments on categories. Think in terms of newspaper/magazine sections and that should help with what names to use. FWIW.
