Yes, the xxxD series is called "Rebel" in North America and "Kiss" in Japan.

****, ****, ****. Moan, moan, moan.

I think its a great new camera. I hope they sell a ton of them and make tons of money. Then they can spend more on R&D for the 50D and the new 5D replacement.:D

This camera is exactly what it needed to be.... no more, no less. In it's category (entry-level) it now has the most MP, Live-view, and IS in the box (with the kit lens). They throw a few bones in these for the slightly more advanced photo crowd (spot metering, highlight tone priority, Digic 3), but this camera is aimed solely at the new DSLR shooter, and is up against the Sony Alpha 100/200, Olympus 410, Nikon 40 series, etc. and it tops that category on paper.

Could Canon have done more with this camera? yes.... did they need to? no, not really. It is what it is: a top of the line entry DSLR that is as-good or better than the competition and carries the Canon name and is backed by the EF line. They aren't looking to get people to replace their XTi s, they are looking to get more P&S converts than the competition.

Rebel XTi, 430ex, Tammy 28-75, nifty fifty, kit lens, tons of reading, not enough practice, and two gorgeous subjects (my kiddies)

Which is precisely not the intended market for this camera.

Sad but true: more megapixels sells P & S cameras, and it will sell to people upgrading from a P & S to their first DSLR.

So - in a business sense - it's hard to criticise Canon, because they're there to make money, and this clearly will.

very true

You people seem upset that Canon put more megapixels in the 450D.

What features did you reasonably expect in a consumer-level DSLR that you didn't get with the 450D? It has a significant number of quality new features for the enthusiast (spot metering, better AF, larger rubberized grip, auto ISO, etc).

What would have made you *not* complain about it?

One way or another, some people will have complained about something while others will have loved it as it is. It is never possible to please every single person.

Canon dished out what they believed was in their best interest all the while responding to some of the demands of the customers to whom they market (i.e. for this particular product), and that's fine. That is how business works.

This canon Philosophy is exactly why Nikon raped them in 2007. Companies that care about their consumers do well.

You seem to have a disturbing and unhealthy obsession with the word "rape". Seriously, I'd talk to somebody about that if I were you.

Incidentally, the fact that Canon has been number one for years (and indeed that Nikon is only doing better in Japan - and then, only recently) suggests that Canon is still doing well.

By your own "logic" then, Canon must therefore know how to treat its customers.

Oh - and here's a more in-depth version of the "news" you've linked to:

http://www.asahi.com …sahi/TKY200801040065.html (external link)

Especially relevant is:

Nikon has lured new customers, mainly women, by launching a series of affordable, entry-level models since December 2006.

They typically sell for between 60,000 yen and 80,000 yen, lower than rival products.

So all Nikon has done is market to a specific market segment and sell cheap.

Nobody's "complaining" about the 450D.

What you're seeing is a reaction to daft suggestions that piddling things like 2 extra mp and some similar specifications, somehow make the 450D a better camera than say, the 40D.

I think the criticisms are coming close to ridiculous.
The sample pics have a lot of noise in the shadows: You're kidding right?
They used an L lens for the sample pics: What lens do you put on when trying to sell your camera?

I don't think anyone has said that.

There's a lot of complaining that people will *think* that, but..... well........ no one actually seems to.
