1. I am extremely happy with my 35mm f/2.0. It takes beautiful pictures.

2. But I do wish I have wider apeture occationally.

3. $1000 is a lot of money but red ring is calling my name.

4. I look at 35L archive thread everyday and wish I had this lens.

5. I'v had this lens in my BH wish list for over a year.

6. No sigma for me because I am going FF very near future.

Are you happy with your 35L? Do I need this lens? Will I get sick if I don't get this baby? Please don'f flame me

Daniel,
After looking at your gear list, I'd say you have 2 options (assuming you have the cash to spend):

1. Get the 35L to replace your 35 2.0 unless you have an attachment to the buzz-saw focusing sound

2. If you want to hold onto the 35 2.0, get a 24L since it provides nearly identical results to the 35L and is roughly equal to 38mm on FF (disregard this option if you don't want to go that wide)

The good thing with option 2 is that, assuming you buy from B&H, you have 2 weeks to try it out and see if you like it or not....then if you find it's too wide, you can return it and get the 35L instead.

It is excellent on FF and very good for portraits on crop bodies.
You can`t go wrong with this lens.

It's been my favorite prime....old reliable, no surprises....solid.
Something else to consider is that you don't hear too much of copy variation with this lens, there has been some, but very limited. I suspect the ones that have not been great out of the box were used or an anomoly

I don't know if 'happy' conveys the emotion enough. Ecstatic would probably be a better word.

I'm very happy with it - at first I thought it was a bit of a boring focal length on my crop, but I'm growing to really enjoy its sharpness.

With a 35L on one body and an 85L on another, I could almost never have to swap lenses. F1.4 makes a difference when you can shoot wide open and still be tack sharp.

- It's the kind of lens you buy to use for many years to come, compared to a cheap lens you buy for occasional use that you can get by with. Worth every penny.

I used the 35/2 primarily for around 5-6 years on my D30 and it is a great lens. The 35L is everything that lens is - and more. While the former has some shortcomings, the latter has none. Some may say it's a little soft wide open, okay, it's not an 85L. But other than that (and perhaps a lack of weathersealing found in newer lenses) what more could you want?

I love the 35L, it's a fantastic lens through and through. Is it for you? Hard to say. Rent one and try it for a while and see if the extra cost is worth it to you.

to be honest i haven't used my 35L that much and the best word i can think of that descibes how i feel right now is ambivalent.

i am a little disappointed at its performance @ f1.4 on my mark III. i actually liked the 50 1.4 @ f1.4 on my 5d better.

but the 35 improves @ f1.6 and by f2 is very good.

ask me again in three months because i really haven't used the 35L enough to form an opinion.

I'm not much on "bad copies" and all that, but I find my 35L to be quite good wide open. In the interest of full disclosure, I haven't peeped all my glass, either. But I have no complaints with the 35L wide open...

I'll have to dig around, but there's a bunch of them peppered throughout this gallery of WDW shots (external link), notably the night shots. All handheld. Mostly in "snapshot mode" rather than "fine art mode" so I wouldn't peep them too harshly... But nevertheless, I'm happy with the results.
