i will be going on my first cruise to ensenada, mexico tomorrow. i want to bring my 5D along and just wanted to make sure that it's safe to do so since i'll be out at sea for a few days. will the humidity/moisture be any issue? i'm pretty sure it won't be, but just wanted to consult with you guys to be sure. :)

It will be fine...and don't forget the tripod. The sunrise/sunset shots are always great from the ship.

As long as you’re not changing lenses in a salt spray, it will be fine. One thing you might watch is going from an air-conditioned room out doors if it hot and steamy. You can get condensation on your glass. Just store your bag away from the air-conditioner vent when your gear is indoors and let it warm up a bit when you go out doors and you’ll be fine.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

I took my brand new 40D to a Caribbean cruise over Christmas and encountered zero problems. Just insure it before you leave.

I would be more worried about theft. Of course you will "carry on" your equipment, and keep all your equipment in the room safes.

I wish I had a witty cliche' like everyone else.

2nd this

I would also take a copy of your purchase receipt(s) for your equipment - Customs proof

Of course you will "carry on" your equipment, and keep all your equipment in the room safes.

I wouldn't count on the safe being large enough for all your equipment

Hi,

I'd not want to be without my cameras on any trip! Your equip will be safer on the ship than on shore. Enjoy!

It's been quite a while since I was there, but I doubt very much has changed...

There are some areas of Ensenada "off the beaten path", i.e. not the usual touristy areas downtown, that are pretty rough. Be a little careful if you go wandering around there carrying camera equip. Maybe keep to a small group of at least three or four if you walk, or take a cab recommended by one of the downtown hotels or restaurants.

Be prepared for street vendors, mostly women and children. "Chicle" means chewing gum. They'll want to sell you some!

Don't drink the local water... That includes any drinks made with it without boiling, any uncooked items like salads that are washed in it, even ice in drinks. Most of the touristy places only use purified bottled water for everything. Still, it never hurts to ask.

Go for it. I brought a LOT of stuff with me on my last cruise - and plan to again next month! ;)

Forget about the safe, it's useless. Big enough for a wallet and a pair of earrings.

I have taken my Original Digital Rebel on that very trip at least twice. Have a great time, and bring us back some pictures.

Get a good sealed camera bag or store your camera inside a ziplock; saltwater can corrode anything.

Before 2007 i spent the best (worst) part of 18 months in offshore/shipyard situations from South Africa, to Singapore,Korea and Russia. This included one trip of over 8 weeks on a floating refinery being towed from Singapore to Sth Africa.
It also included some radical temperature changes between inside and outside situations, particularly in Korea and Russia.
I always carried my camera/s and lenses, and were always in standard carry bags. UP until now i have no issues with rust or anything similar. I never used ziplocks or anything similar.
When required i just waited for temperature to adjust naturally to clear the condensation. Sometimes this could take up to 15minutes or more.
I will also add i was never shy in changing lenses, even within the filthy air of the shipyards.

Rust and condensation is not the problem it's corrosion from the salt water. Corrosion something that can occur slowly and can continue long after your away from the salt water. The corrosive salts are in the air as well as the water. There is no reason not to be smart and take a few simple protective measures.
