do you think canon will come out with the IS version of the 24-70 lens anytime soon? also, how long has the 24-70 been around?

My guess is that this lens will show up along with the new 5D.

It's pretty inevitable since Sony and Nikon both have the same lens but with VR & SSS. The current version has been around since 2002.

Nikon's 24-70 doesn't have VR and was released, what, last year? Hey, I wouldn't mind seeing a 24-70L with IS... of course, it'd probably mean that my 24-70 would lose some value but oh well, it'll still take nice pics :p

That would be pretty logical. 5D II, 24-70 IS, and ??

NO! I'm thinking about picking one up in the next couple of weeks. Now I might need to think about holding out... :(

I feel you, i was really considering picking up a 24-70 but i think ill just hold out till the IS version comes out. i have a ef-s 17-55 IS so that should hold me till then.

Well, if it makes y'all feel any better, I have the 24-70/2.8L and I wouldn't trade it for an IS version. Well, maybe an even trade, but I suspect that there would be a price premium (at least at first) of $200-300 for the priviledge of having IS and at that focal length, it isn't all that important to me.

Yeah, after I calmed down and thought about it I doubt they would release an IS version for the same price. Plus, if there are any issues I don't want to be a beta tester. I think I will still pick it up in the next couple of weeks. Worst case, I sell it next year to get the IS version.

Just look at the price of a Nikon 24-70! I doubt the IS version would cost any less than that.

Look at how many 24-70s they sell compared to the 24-105 IS? It isn't needed anyway. I can hand hold mine with good results at 1/30. It is selling fine without IS, and it really doesn't need it. You could expect it to cost $400-600 more as well. If I had IS on a 24-70, it would rarely be used.

I wish they made a 24-105 F/2.8L IS

But then again if that came out we would want something even better. 10-1200mm F/1.4L IS USM
