Hi all,

This may be a little off topic, but everyone seems to love the Canon 85mm 1.8 lens. Just wondering why someone would want to use a fixed lens with no focal range? I use a 24-105mm lens and I'm pretty happy with the results. Can anyone help me understand why this lens would be preferred over a lens with a focal range? And I understand the f-stop of 1.8 is a factor here as well.. but I mainly shoot indoors with lighting so a low f-stop is not a big concern for me. Thanks!

You last picture is amazing. Im glad your not like some people who blow out a pic, convert it to B&W, and ask which one do you like better?? This picture has perfect exposure, perfect composition, excellent contrasts. Not to mention two gorgeous models. Excellent work, looking forward to more.

thanks so much everyone!

eric1170, it's all about sharpness. primes (fixed lenses, no focal range) are known to be incredibly sharp, and for portraits you just can't beat the sharpness of a prime in my opinion. i shoot with my 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM a lot, which is very sharp, but this $1700 hog can't touch the sharpness of my $400 85mm...or $100 50mm 1.8. and for indoor pictures, you can't beat the 1.8 as well, unless i'm guessing you're shooting in a studio? but the lens you speak of is great, no doubt there. i just prefer primes for my portrait / hot girls work ;)

Ah.. so your using the non-L series lens.. I thought you were using the L series 85mm. Well the pics look great for that lens which leads me to my next question, what's the major difference with the L series 85mm and the non-L series 85mm lens? Looks to me like the $400 lens does quite well based on your samples.

Thanks all..

thanks!

eric1170: the L series is a f/1.2, faster glass, quality's better, but for the money you can't beat the 85. the 1.2 glass is a lot sharper, they say, and is even better in lower light. it's niiiiiiiiice, but for $1100+ it better be :D
