When I import from the card, i'll choose the date(s) of photos from a shoot. Then i'll click 'Choose....' to create a new folder with yy.mm.dd_shoot description. When I click 'Import', it imports them to that folder in explorer, but the folder in lightroom doesn't take that name. Instead it just gets named by date.

I can go back and rename it to match what I named it in explorer...but there must be a way to not have to go back and do that everytime?

Thanks for any help.

I had a similar issue a while back and couldn't figure out the problem. After about an hour of searching and experimenting I gave up believing the problem is a bug, or a feature coming in next version.

I'm back guys.

I'm just investigating this one, but it's behaving exactly as I'd expect on my Mac.

So can you just run me through your exact sequence of events so I can be sure I'm replicating it correctly?

I'll fire up a Windows machine over the next couple of days and see if I can narrow it down further.

1. I select pics of the card I want to import.
2. I make a new folder for this set of photos named yy.mm.dd_shoot description
3. I import
4. It imports them and puts them in a folder by date, instead of what i named the folder in explorer.

What i've been doing is copying the folder name of the folder i create before importing. Then when I rename the lightroom, folder I just paste. Sometimes the pics will be in a subfolder, and the primary folder will be named 2008 (there should be a way to turn that off...it's like it's trying to continue it's own folder structure).

Thanks for the help!!

Ah ok, try this then...

Here's the dialog:

Now I'm guessing you've got that red box set to one of the date options, right?

Instead, try pointing the folder to the next highest level 'i.e. your pictures folder', inside which you want to have your dated/shoot folder.

Then set it to 'into one folder' (to stop it creating multiple dated folders).

Tick the 'put in subfolder' and use that to automatically create your yy.mm.dd_shoot folder, save you doing it manually.

Does that work for you, or have I misunderstood your end result folder structure?

I was always choosing the folder and not putting in a subfolder, instead of leaving it set at my main folder for that catalog. That will make things quicker! I tried the into one folder which worked. Doing, that, I can't select pics from the card by date right? I have to check off the ones I don't want to import manually right?

No, you can't select by date that way. You can shift-click to select multiple items, and then checking one of the boxes will check the other selected images too.

So you do actually want them divided up by date folder then?

Can you just run me through the folder structure you're wanting to get?

Simple solution although it doesn't really address the problem. Buy Downloader Pro (external link), or use the freeware version of ImageIngester Pro (external link) to move your images from your card reader to whatever file/folder structure you desire....with these two programs you are only limited by your imagination. After importing to your folder structuer, you can then use Lightroom's Import from Disk function.

I believe in "horses for courses" and a specialized application should always be better than a general application that tries to do all things, but not necessarily well.
