Maybe you accidentally changed the AF switch on your lens to manual?

When you look in the viewfinder do you see a ghosting in the view? Like a shift of the main image but a little bit lighter?

Yeah, could be a mirror problem. Is this an original digital rebel (300D)?

Also, make sure that the battery isn't very low.

I m having the same problem as well (300D).

The camera will focus the auto mode only. Not in Av, Tv, or M.

avmoran.
Try the green square (auto mode) to see if it focus.

Does the rebel have AI Servo? If it does maybe you are in that and so focus won't lock but will continuously keep AF'ing. If it doesn't then don't bother reading this....:D

Saw a few posts recently about dust on the AF sensors which caused similar issues. Try blowing out your mirror box, particularly at the bottom where the AF sensors are.

I presume that this is the original Digital Rebel (300D). If so, the cause is probably a failure of the hinge pin for the secondary mirror (Canon calls it a submirror). This is a weak point in that particular model.

If the secondary mirror sticks in the "down" position it blocks the bottom 3/4 of the frame. If it sticks in "up" position—actually to the back of the main mirror—the AF won't operate.

In the US, Canon will charge about $200 plus shipping to fix it.

If you're good with tools and have a lot of nerve, you can try to fix it yourself. Understand that if you try to fix it yourself and fail, the camera will probably be screwed up beyond repair. This is an "all or nothing" project.

This sounds like you have hacked firmware installed and have one of the settings messed up. (I don't know enough about the hacks to advise on any details.)

The Canon firmware on the original Digital Rebel (300D) was designed to be pretty much foolproof, and I can't think of any way that this can happen with that firmware.

I've used the hacked firmware on my 300D for nearly 3 years. I can't think of any custom function that'd prevent focusing in creative modes.

The options are just the same as for the 10D, except that not all of them work.

Doesn't the hack allow shifting focus to the "*" key? I know that was one of the 10D's CFs (CF -1 on the 10D, IIRC; the D60 before it used CF-2 in that role).

Nope. A disappointment. CF4 shows on the menu, but it doesn't work.
