REMINDER:

Post here with updates/progress or news related to the MKIII AF Fix.
Post only in the official thread. New threads will be merged.

DO NOT POST HERE about your personal issues with Canon.
Or your theories concerning the existence of a problem.
We have enough posts on that subject now.

Apparently it's still vogue to assume the worst about both photographers and Canon despite the fact that this recent news could very well settle both of the following arguments.

The focus issue is real. Canon's actions clearly establish this as fact.
Debating this reality is only a source of controversy, and needless at this point in time.

Many have created a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" mentality on this,
Currently many feel impatient to have been informed that a fix is in the works prior to the upcoming recall process being ready to be applied.
At the same time (and maybe the same people) many are angry that Canon did not tell us sooner, whether they were ready or able to make a repair or not.
If they tell us early we have to belly ache while waiting, if they wait to tell us when the fix is in, then it's months of belly aching about "no news"
This is a no win situation, and not worth continued discussion.
Keep to the topic of the progress and news related to the AF issue.

The bullets are;

1. There was and is a problem with the MkIII. This is not longer a debate, it is fact.
2. Most of the released units to date may be effected.
3. Canon will be implementing a process to repair the MkIII

I am confident that the time taken to get to the route of this matter was well spent, and we will see a very real very functional fix.
Please do not speculate to the contrary of any of the above, and most importantly, don't do so in a way that assumes the worst of our fellow members. It's insulting and flame baiting.

the time for flaming over this subject has passed
.
It's cooked.

More information will be added as it is made available.

If you come across updates from Canon or other valid sources that you do not see here,
Please contact a Moderator so the information will be added.

Any new threads that are posted on the topic will be removed.
We've been at this for close to a year now and we are still seeing the same posts repeated, the same arguments debated that we did in June of '07.

Only actual updates to the continuing MkIII AF issue will be posted.

Info from JBF

Sent my Mark III back to Canon for the 3rd time, spoke with a nice Tech at the Virginia center. I asked him about the Rob Galbraith article, to which he said "oh, that article" I then asked if there was a new fix coming and he said that is just a rumor and he can't comment on things they don't know about. Thought the group might want to hear about this.

FYI...

Updated Service Notice: EOS-1D Mark III: AF Mirror Adjustment Problem

March 5, 2008
Updated Information After the AF mirror Adjustment, including the updated firmware version 1.1.3, the EOS-1D Mark III AF function performed better in our tests than all previous EOS camera models.
Canon strives at all times to continuously improve our products in order to provide our customers with the best performance and value.
We are aware that some customers have raised questions about the performance of the EOS-1D Mark III AF system under certain conditions. We will continue to investigate, and look for opportunities to improve, the performance of the AF system to ensure the satisfaction of all of our customers

I bought a blue dot in January and returned it last month due to the announcement of a second fix. It is a leaps and bounds better than my 30D. Hopefully any future fix to come will resolve any remaining issues. (so I can buy it again! :D)

This just in from one of our World Wide Correspondents;

It seems there is talk of another firmware update.

Sergi tells me the rough gist of the Spanish article mentions a firmware to be released by April 30th

The Firmware will address new flash adjustments, new personal function settings, (very interesting!) and most important, Autofocus!

sergi2 wrote:
"(the article) says that 30 april .. new firmware (will be ) released, solving definitely remaining problems with autofocus"

I've run the above article through Google translater,. not perfect but here it is unedited for you to make your own edits in your head.

Canon last another firmware to improve the autofocus of the EOS-1D Mark III
The problems archiconocidos focus of the EOS-1D Mark III could be finally resolved in less than a week. According could know QUESABESDE.COM, will be the next day 30 when Canon released a new firmware update to settle some of the shortcomings of this autofocus SLR and equip it with new features.
Drafting .- It will take a few days yet to be official confirmation, but several industry sources have already advanced to QUESABESDE.COM that the EOS-1D Mark III is about to receive a new firmware update.

Even though by now there are no data on this very specific process, the future versions intended to become the ultimate solution to the problems that have dragged some bodies with autofocus tracking.

The first signs of this second repair of the camera-which affect only the firmware and do not require passage through the technical service-dating earlier this year.

© Eduardo Parra, QUESABESDE.COM

After the PMA, some means considering the Canon could have discovered the definitive source of the problems of the EOS-1D Mark III and echoed his intention to make these improvements with a new firmware version.

The new data to which access has been circulating this medium and long days between professional circles arrive precisely the week in which many were made by Canon and renew its veteran EOS 5D. An announcement that, at least for now, has not taken place.

New Features

This version would be the second renewal of firmware that the signature proposed for SLR fastest, and most importantly, promises to bring substantial improvements with regard to autofocus.

Indeed, it seems, despite the fact that many units of the camera have gone through the technical service to repair the subespejo, performance monitoring approach is still not optimal in some circumstances.

Beyond improvements to the autofocus, the new version could also provide new functions and capabilities of camera settings. In this regard, the possibility of controlling the flash settings from the body or customize the functions of some commanders were among the developments planned.

1. Direct selection of AF points by the Multi-controller is added to C.Fn III-9.
2. Alternate access to Exposure compensation is added to C.Fn IV-3.

Sergi send word that Spanish Photography sight quesabesde.com, the first place to break the Firmware story, is saying that Canon is going to further extend the warranty..

google translation of quesabesde wrote:
Expansion of security

Pese a que Canon aún no lo ha difundido públicamente, QUESABESDE.COM ha podido saber que algunos distribuidores españoles ya han sido informados de una inminente ampliación de garantía para ambas Mark III. Despite that Canon has not yet publicly disseminated, QUESABESDE.COM could Spaniards know that some distributors have already been notified of an impending expansion of guarantee for both Mark III.

Esta medida, que Canon anunciará probablemente esta misma semana, se traducirá en doce meses más de garantía para cualquiera de las dos EOS de gama profesional. This measure, Canon will probably announce later this week, will result in more than twelve months warranty for either professional EOS range. Del mismo modo, los cuerpos que se adquieran a partir del momento del anuncio dispondrán de una garantía de dos años, en lugar del año obligatorio para este tipo de productos. Similarly, the bodies being procured from the time of the announcement will have a two-year warranty, instead of year compulsory for such products.

Everything seems to indicate that Canon wants termination of once and for all the serious problems he has suffered his brand-new EOS-1D Mark III over the past few months, marking a turning point with new firmware version and the planned extension of warranty.
