QUOTED IMAGE

Can you explain what makes this a "bokeh test"?

Looks like a cloth with very little total depth of field. Consequently, it would seem to me to be about as far from a test of bokeh as you can get. I clearly must be missing something important.

My gear:
Canon 5D mk III, 7D | Canon 70-200 mm f2.8L IS, 100-400 mm f4.5-5.6L, 24-105 mm f4L, 16-35 mm f4LIS, 50 mm f1.4, 100 mm f2.8L IS macro, | Canon 580 EX II Flash

man, I'm such a bokeh fiend. Too bad the 85mm f/1.2 is so expensive :)

I like the second one. The first needs some white balance correction.

Does it? Looks fine on both of my monitors.

Well, yes it is a cloth, with a background of spring plants and flowers. I wanted to see how the S3 IS would handle it if focused with a wide aperture on the very thinly-woven cloth curtain -- would it produce a soft, pleasantly out-of-focus background? It did, which fits my definition of bokeh! Perhaps I could have done better with my DSLR, but the point of the exercise was to see what a decent compact could do...

The same shot with a wider aperture, BTW, showed the background in considerable detail, so the softness was not due to the cloth but to the wider aperture, hence the term bokeh.

Thanks for the clarification. Slightly subtle, but I see the point now.
