so these guys have ridden the blog-fuelled hype wave to land themselves on the cover of Spin, and to an appearance playing on Saturday Night Live...they checked in for a boisterous sold-out show a few weeks ago, and i wanted to see what the fuss was all about. i wasn't convinced, and left after about a half-dozen songs, but surely they are connecting in a big way w/ a lot of people.

Nice shots narlus.

There seems to be a lot of overblown hype about a lot of people at the moment - Friday night I shot The Dirtbombs + Jay Reatard - both have been getting huge hype lately and both were decidedly underwhelming IMHO.

thanks being the one to comment on the photos, richard. ;)

i see the blogosphere as kinda being the same hype machine that the UK music sheets like NME and Melody Maker used to be in the 80s/90s - tripping over themselves to flog the newest flavor of the month, which due to increased distribution and availability is now down to the flavor of the day, if not hour.

the Strokes went from a massive band w/ a huge debut to a band no one cared about by the third record (if not sooner).

i personally would hate to try to figure out how to actually survive as a musicial performer in this day and age.

i dig the Dirtbombs. haven't seen any of Mick Collins' bands before, but i will make a point of catching him when he gets here.

I like #4.

The singer doesn't seem to give much different expressions to work with ;)

no...they really are just kids out of college, not sure how long they've been playing/performing.

at least they aren't guilty of over-emoting for the sake of show (kinda like the singer for the band who opened for Bob Mould last night).

Playing on SNL seems to me to be for only lesser or no-talent performers ... after all, SNL is not music showcase, it is a comedy show!

dwight, i don't think that you (or the regular paying attendees @ Chumash) are in the intended demographic for SNL...

their musical booking in the 70s and part of the 80s was pretty awesome. it's gone downhill steadily since (can you say Ashley Simpson and her 'jig'??).

here's a list of all the people who have played:

I agree with Rene on # 4. You would thing that with being on the hype wagon these days that they could afford to buy the drummers some sticks rather than having him use his head to pound on th skins.

Otherwise it looks like you were able to get some good exposures with ISO 3200 but the grain and striped shirt in #5 is alternately looking good and bad to me. Odd effect.
