Thanks guys. I can't say what I said out loud when I first saw these ones so, excellent work on these ones Hoff :) Does the way you attach the strap make a big difference in shooting from the hip?

Yea, I think the grip and handstrap is essential for the way I hold it. Cos will tell you; I spend most of the day with it in hand, by my side.

I'm getting ready for a trip where I was going to leave the 5D un-gripped but I can't shoot from the hip that way as it is impossible to hold the camera with a decent horizon level. It just looks so much less obtrusive without it so I'm experimenting with the around-the-neck idea instead.

I think you guys just got the wires crossed. Shadowkipper was saying a Wireless Release is cheating -- not a Wide Angle.

Ha! I read WA! Sorry shadow

people will always try to stop you doing the right thing if it is unconventional

so for the hip shots, are you using a hand strap? or just holding the camera?

Yup, battery grip + handstrap makes it easy to hold with one hand. Thumb on * and index on the shutter.

Once you get your horizons and aiming down, the next trick to learn is the "mid-step pause" where you stop in your tracks for that moment you want the shot. IS can help if your shutter speeds aren't up there.

ya i still need to get my hands on an IS lens :(

and im still having some trouble figuring out the whole hip shot thing. cant seem to get a comfortable position that would render any half decent shots

"The hip" is just a holdover of terminology.. I just let me arm hang down at my side, usually tilting my wrist up a bit when I'm about to shoot.

I thought I had something of the pink building but evidently not; I'll see what I can do!
