I never understood the desire people have for a second body. Unless you're a pro, why waste your money? If you want the 5D more, get it and sell your 40D for the 35mm.

That's unfortunate for you to say. Not everyone shoots like you or sees photography the same way you do.

a) Backup. What's wrong with that? Some hobbyists take this very seriously.
b) Different tools for different purposes. I'm a big fan of the fullframe/crop combination. I think a 5D, 1D, and 40D would be a killer combo and not a waste at all. 5D for landscapes, portraits, low-light, macro, and most things. 1D for heavy duty, fast paced work. 40D for some extra reach for things like birding.
c) It's a lot nicer to have 2 bodies on a shoot than 1. Try it some day, you'll understand.

Get the Lenses. This way, if there 'is' a new 5D that comes out, at some point, the current 5D's will be much cheaper...and you wouldn't have to save as much, the second time round.

Bodies come and go...glass, well, that stays for a LONG time.

Two scenarios come to mind which are the primary reasons I'm considering a second body.

1. Inside shots:
Put my 24-105L/580EXII or 85mm f/1.8 on my 40D, and 70-200mm on the 5D. Shortens the length of the 70-200mm, and optionally lets me choose 24-105 w/flash or 85mm cropped without.

2. Outside shots:
Put my 24-105L on the 5D for closer-range shots, and the 70-200mm on the 40D to gail 1.6x effective FL.

Basically, depending on the situation, it would let me switch length quickly. As it is, I find myself swapping lenses all the time lately!

Just got my second 5D last Friday. I thought about waiting for the "possible" new model. Decided I wanted the keep the same bodies. My first trip was that glacier trip that is posted in Travel and Landscape. It was the best move I have made. NO MORE LENS CHANGING to get the right lens on the right body!!! Sold my XTI to help pay the bill.

Okay - I'm <30 days from purchase, but now a new twist.

35L + 17-40L

or

5D

or

1Ds (Mark I)

They're all in about the same price range. As I currently own both a 24-105L and 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (which both happen to be weather sealed) I admit the possibility of mating them with a 1Ds is attractive. I know the limit of 1250 ISO, but I'm looking for more versatility than high ISO performance.

Opinions?

I don't want to ruin your day but to me it sounds like that you're not yet absolutely sure what you *really* need... although I suggest the first option

17-40 on my 5D! MMmmmmmm!

I have a 5D, a 40D and a 20D.
When I got the 5D I sold my 10-22 and got a 17-40 instead to use the 5D for WA. I found that the distorsion in the 17-40 is annoying and the vignetting as well. That lens collects dust on the shelf at home and used only on the 40D as a party walkaround. I tried different WA lenses including the 16-35 II on the 5D but found the same annoying distorsion there. Finally got a Sigma 20 mm 1.8 which is the best yet for the 5D.

I ended up getting a new 10-22 and now use the 40D for WA, best combo yet.

I'm surprised soo many seem to like the 17-40 on FF, I think it stinks.

That said it's nice to have both an FF body and a crop body and I would get it again before a 35L. The 50 1.4 on the 5D is great and very sharp and give higher IQ than 35L on a 40D in low light.

I can't tell you how much I like my 5D, I think 24-105 is plenty wide for ff you could wait on the 17-40 I can't comment on the 35L but I'll tell you this its great to have a ff with a crop 2nd body it was like going back to the good old days and 5D IQ is lovely
by the way we're neighbors I'm in levittown

Don't try to overthink this. Get the 5D. You're correct that it changes the way you use your lenses. It's a awesome camera and you won't regret the results you'll get with your great glass.
