I came across this listing today when I was visiting www.Stock20.com (external link)... which is also a good place to find music... so I thought I'd share it with you all.

Great resources for music to use in slideshows... :)

www.studiocutz.com (external link) - Good sound, good selection.

www.productiontrax.com (external link) - Very large library. Supports independent artists. Drawback. Some of the tracks aren't great quality.

www.smartsound.com (external link) - Unique proprietary software allows you to customize the length and mood of your soundtracks.

www.sounddogs.com (external link) - Industry standard for instantly downloading sound effects. some music too.

www.beatsuite.com (external link) - Royalty Free Production Music Library with high-quality music tracks, music loops and sounds for the multimedia, broadcast and computer games industry. Instant Preview, Purchase, Download. Our friends in the UK with a nice site, and some quality tracks.

www.royaltyfreeclassicalmusic.co.uk (external link) - Royalty Free Classical Music library offering Classical compilations, full tracks and loops with high quality previews and instant download MP3 or WAV

What is this the musical equivalent of microstock?

I'd shun this stuff on principle!

We as photographers object to people using our work for free, why should we use the work of others for free?

It's not free. They're are selling it. I've never seen royalty free music for "free".

i'd assume these sites are buying these tracks or cds the same way as a photograher sells his photos to a royaltyfree agency - at a flat fee. yes.....?

:)

most of the music is instrumental... the entire reason for the music is to be sold to the market for purposes of media/video/photography.

The music is for sale with a license agreement. It's totally legit and the most prudent way to use music on slideshows.

Studiotime nailed it... the music is being sold as "stock music". The same way a photographer can choose to sell his images for stock.

Yes, the artists sell their music to the music site for a flat rate. Then the music site sells the music to people like us for a flat rate. Everybody profits (except the customer who pays for the tracks)... there's nothing "free" about it.

I believe you either give it away or charge a fair price.
I have worked many times for free, it was often necessary to get sample work in a field I had not worked in previously and sometimes just to get work.
Music is the same, there are many musicians out there who are dieing for someone to use their work just to get the recognition. I heard an artist say that he would rather give it away then discount it, because if he discounted it he applied that value to his work, but if he gave it away he could apply what ever value to it he wanted. That is what I believe the problem with micro stock agencies. inevitably there will be a perceived value to images downloaded from the internet.

another thing to do is to go on myspace and look for musicians starting out...some will let you use their music in exchange for a credit on your website
