Thanks for the catch. I corrected my initial post as well. Interesting note, the Canon will be available in June, Pentax in August.

$500? I wouldn't. The Canon isn't THAT bad. $350 maybe since by the time you add a hood to the Canon it's around that price.

I view my EF 50mm f/1.4 as a 50mm f/2 with USM (even after a visit to Canon). My Siggy 30mm, on the other hand, is sharp at f/1.4. So, the question to me is, is the Sigma 50mm (provided it's sharp at f/1.4) worth $150 more if it gets me one more stop? For me, the answer would be "yes".

"Raw" is not an acronym, abbreviation, nor a proper noun; thus, it should not be in capital letters.

It will really get interesting if the Sigma is as sharp at 1.4 as the Canon L is at 1.4.

Mine was fine wide open. My Tak 50, on the other hand, improves drastically just going from 1.4 to 1.8. At least I think that's 1.8. The first click from wide open. It's either that or f/2.

This has to be in the top three most anticipated lens releases in a long time - the 17-55 F/2.8 IS, 70-200 F/4 IS, and this. The first two pretty much lived up to the hype and speculations, lets hope this does too.

Anybody figure out why this lens is so fat compared to the Canon version? It looks about the same size as the Canon 50mm f/1.2L!

I didn't see that this was posted yet, but Adorama is taking pre-orders now. $499. They also list the full specs. Most we knew, but new to me was the 8 elements in 6 groups, 9 aperture blades and f16 min aperture.

f/16 minimum aperture? That's kinda weak. I know someone's gonna chime in with some comment about diffraction, but sharpness ain't everything and sometimes you just wanna stop down more...

Nevertheless, I might pick up this lens and compare it with the Canon, which is ok but overall quite disappointing to me. The real HSM motor, build and internal focusing are really appealing. The size and filter ring...less so. I like how compact the Canon 50 1.4 is. 77mm is the thread size of most L-zooms :(. L-primes use mostly 72mm, and non-L primes 58mm. I would've liked one of those sizes, but can't win 'em all I guess.

I love the larger size of the lens makes me able to use 1 filter on more lenses. Plus i think the bigger lens is easier to handle. I think f16 is fie for me. I cant ever think I have taken a shot over f8 on anything but my macro lens. I think I am gonna order this thing as soon as its shipping

The DP review link above says F22. So I dont know who's right. I was expecting F22.

I've been following this thread since day one, and now is my time to finally speak. This is the one prime I've yet to own, but it will be mine one day. As far as Sigma vs Canon goes, who cares. As soon as this lens became public I told myself "there's my next lens." This lens will perform as expected, and for the included hood, case, 77mm, and 3-5 year warranty, that's enough for me. Enough about Sigma's QC issues; have you ever seen Adorama having their "refurbished by Canon" sales. Yeah, that's right, refurbished. As if every item that rolls out of Canons door is like the virgin herself.

And what is all this talk about minimum aperture? It's a f1.4, that's what all the hype is about! I couldn't care if it went to f128. I have one lens at f4 (25-105), and all the rest are 2.8 and larger. I usually shoot wide open, thats the whole reason for spending a grand on a piece of glass.

OK, I feel better now, and I'll get off my soapbox. I'm waiting for the "lets see your Sigma 50/1.4 pics" threads.

I wish I had a witty cliche' like everyone else.

that lens sounds great. lf16 is maximum i've ever used. if its optics is similar or better than sigma 50/2,8 macro - i'd delete canon 50/1,4 from my wishlist.
i wonder why tamron and tokina dont make any fast standard lens.

I also dig ... but I am wondering if it'll fit in the space I have reserved in my Peli case

:lol: Yeah, them Canon stuffs ain't never get no issues. As for anything above f8.0 on a fast prime well I get a nose-bleed.

Not in the corners. even at f8, the 30mm 1.4 sucks in the corners. Hope fully this new lens will be same sharp across the frame.
