Car: Now worth $3000. Camera gear: Replacement value around $11,000.

My car did get written off a few years back and I bought it back so it's slightly misleading but still looks funny on paper :p

My car is costing me money. My gear is making me money...
Only logical to spend more on gear ;)

Right now, it's close to equal. What's really wierd to me is that I drive a Porsche, although it is 22 years old. My plan though is to get rid of the car and buy a cheaper one, then spend the difference on more camera gear. Anyone want to buy a Porsche?

I'm really surprised this is so close, almost 50:50.

Either we've all got some really great gear or some really crummy cars :D

I was hoping to go for a Ford Focus last year but my insurance was still crummy. Giving it one more year if my car lasts before I upgrade now.

About three years ago, I was toying with going digital ( 35 mm Canon SLR gear up to that point) and had a plan for spending about £3,000 on my basic outfit (20D plus 3 lenses). My car was also due for renewal and I was browsing for a decent used one as always. I was aiming to spend around £1,500 on the car and was checking out the dealership I had bought my (then current) ride about 5 years earlier.

Anyway, they had a very nice Jaguar S-type in mint condition which they could let me have for £7,500. I was very tempted and thought about it seriously for a good while, but it would mean that the new DSLR would be put off for at least a couple of years. Anyway, I turned down the Jag, bought the 20D with 10-22, 28-135 and 100-40L lenses and then picked up a very nice 7 year old Mazda 626 GSi at auction for under a grand.

So, three years on and both the 20D and the Mazda are still going strong and neither has given any trouble whatsoever in that time. The 20D has now got a 5D for company as well as a few more lenses.

When my mate found out how much my latest lens cost (£2,950) he said " you could buy a car for that ". When he bought a TVR sports car, my comment was " you could buy a lens for that ". I guess it's all a matter of priorities

Current tally:

Car; about £1,000
DSLR outfit; about £9,500 (add another grand for studio lights etc)

Oh, and the house? That cost just £2,100 for a 4-bedroom, 3 living room semi. So about a fifth of what was spent on my camera and lights. Mind you, it was my parents who bought it back in 1961. I simply inherited it. It seems that it is now worth around £200,000 or, apparently, about half of a small 2 bed flat in Tunbridge Wells. I guess I won't be moving there anytime soon.

Anyway, there isn't an option for "my photo equipment cost more than my car and my house" so I just clicked the top one.

Hmm, a relocation to Merseyside? I do enjoy the odd day out in Formby. Hmmm?

Not quite. The car is just a 55 plate 3 door Colt.;)
Oh, the gear? Well, fortunately there's nothing left to buy for what I shoot, but the bank manager is NOT happy.

Yeah, some nice places to shoot around there. I'm just up the road in Southport.

Well that's the average, there are loads of two-bed flats for over $1m, and according to the lists produced last week, there are four roads within 500yds of me that consist of houses that average over $5m. And if you want more than 4 bedrooms.....
I'm thankful I don't live in London though!
Imagine the camera gear for that much :D
