faulty battery charger?!

I recently bought a 40d. I pop the battery into the charger and the light indicates the battery is fully charged after an hour. I put the battery into the camera and it says the battery needs to be recharged. So I put it back to the charger, but the charger indicates its fully charger. Just wondering if anyone has similar experience. Is the canon battery charger faulty?

Sounds like a faulty charger to me. Give Canon a call, they will swap it out I'm sure.

A couple of my old batterys did that when they died. The charger indicated a full charge, but the camera indicated that they needed charging. Did a voltage check and the batterys were no good.

Good points. If these are brand new (unused) charger and battery, I would first try to charge the battery with another charger belonging to a friend, or maybe a camera store.
