hi there,
got my g9 today and am playing around with the camera, trying to get a good feel for it.
i feel very dumb because when i am in shooting mode and press the flash button to try and turn off the auto flash nothing happens. it's as if i am pressing no button. the macro button, self-timer, and MF button all work fine.

any thoughts? am i completely out of it and missing something? or is there something wrong with my camera?

Relax, don't panic.

If you're in "auto" that likely is what is overriding your flash.

I think maybe you have to press it faster or double press it. If not, then it's faulty and you should look at getting it replaced/fixed.

It sounds like the dial is broken then. When you press the lightning bolt you should always get a selection that includes flash on or off (and Auto for Basic modes).

Sometimes it's the simple things :)

Is the hotshoe cover plastic?

In case you didn't already know, you should get the hot shoe cover on this page;
