I know it's sad that I know this but... Lenticular Alto-Cumulus caused by mountain wave effects!!!! Interesting shapes.

Thank You! for the FYI!

It is the weirdest cloud formations I have ever seen....I was really expecting a UFO to fly out of the clouds. The picture really doesn't really show what it was like that day.

Thanks!

These are great! We get them quite often here along the front range of the Rockies.

If an artist would make clouds like these in a painting people would be going on about his "naive" style and yet, there they are...
And techlab2k, there's nothing sad about knowing stuff ;-)a

Lenticular clouds!!! What an AWESOME catch... pure eye-candy for my atmospheric loving heart... and funny you should tap the posting with a UFO label: Lenticular clouds have been known to stir up reports of UFO sightings... LoL

I wish I could remember where I put the other pictures I took at the same time. If I find them I will post them also. The clouds were so flat on the bottom and so oddly layered.

As you can see, the clouds were starting to separate into 3 formations, actually 4; the forth formation was to the right off the shot and it was like 5-7 layers if I remember.

I took this shot Sept of 2007, I will keep an eye out for more this year. Location is just North of Highland, CA 92346; San Bernardino Mountain Range.
At the time I only had the Canon S200, 2 mega pixel...now, I can't wait to capture it on my G7 or G2 !
