I'm looking to buy a 40D and was thinking about J&R as they had some really good prices on it & a couple other lenses (5% back w/LiveSearch).

I thought I'd always heard they were decent (ok at least), but I just checked resellerratings.com and J&R has a 6.10 (out of 10) 6-month rating. Not very confidence inspiring. =

Has this place gone down the tubes lately?

Amazon only has a 7.61, yet B&H has a 9.62 and Adorama has a 8.85.

Last thing I ordered from them were some bluray titles.
I think my only complaint would be slow shipping.

They are quite reputable here in NYC. I wouldn't worry about shopping with them.

Very good merchant - I actually have had good experiences with their shipping... I have bought all kinds of things from them, both in store and on line, never any issues.

J&R has been a pillar of mail-order and internet electronics for many, many years.

They are excellent all-around. Very good reputation and a long, long history of satisfied customers, good service, and good prices.

Anyone have experience with returns/RMA's from J&R?
I have no intention of returning anything I order, but if it's damaged or defective, I want a quick swap and not be told to piss-off and contact Canon.

You have 30 days to return or exchange a product if you are dissatisfied for basically any reason.

After that, the manufacturer's warranty applies.

Their return policy is actually a little friendlier than B&H's. They have a store that's an entire city block in lower Manhattan and have been there for a loong time. I don't see them closing up shop just to get out of you wanting to return a lens :)

I feel better about J&R now. I'm sure B&H does 2-3x the business, but they also have 2-3x the number of complaints as well!

I was pretty skeptical dealing with J&R I seem to recall a bad experience with them a long, long time ago. About a year ago I gave them another shot and bought a Sony Surround Sound Processor from them. I am one of the lucky ones that live only a state away from them so I got it the next day. Obviously that was a very good experience.

Back in April I bought a Canon 70-200 f/4 IS from them the only hitch if you want to call it that was they called me to verify the order. I missed the call so it got delayed a day. They said it was some kind of fraud prevention. Since then I haven't had any issues and I have ordered quite a bit from them.

To answer another part of your question when I got the lens I decided that the f/2.8 would be a better suited lens for me so I returned the f/4 to them for a refund only because I couldn't find the 2.8 on their site. They called me to confirm the refund and said they had the f/2.8 so I ordered it and as usual got it the next day.

Since then I've purchased many things from them included my 580EX II Flash and only 3 weeks ago the 40D Package you mentioned, when I order it they said it would ship in 7-10 business days, well as usual I got it the very next day!!!

On of the other reasons I went with them and continue to go back with them is because they offer a 30 Day return policy which is 15 - 20 days better than almost everyone else I deal with.

Nowadays they are one of the first places I will look at for anything electronic I am looking to purchase and usually they are right on par price wise with everyone else and 90% of the items have free shipping. I haven't been able to get that from anyone else.

I ordered some headphones from them, and they marked the customs form as two pairs, so I had to pay twice the tax when they were delivered. It took ages to get it sorted out.

I bought my 1DM3 from them. I'd never used them before but they were the only ones who could guarantee me one on pre-order (this was last year when the M3's first came out). They promised it by a certain date and actually delivered...no hassles.

I thought I would add to this since I had another experience with J&R... The 40D that I mentioned I purchased from them I had some issues with (not focusing properly) so I called up for an RA # to swap it out they said as long as I had everything and blank warranty cards I would be all set.

I shipped it out right before the long weekend and got a brand new replacement today and I am very happy to report that this copy works a whole lot better.

I used almost the full 30 days of their return policy and they didn't even question it at all. They are one of my top companies I use when looking to order these days.
