24-70 f/2.8 or 24-105 f/4 IS POLL

Ok, this isn't a debate which to get...well sort of but I'm just looking for votes as to how many out there has one over the other or both?

Maybe people's opinions have changed over the last few, err, days...

One is f/2.8, one is f/4
One has IS, one doesn't
One goes from 71mm to 105mm, one doesn't
One has a hood the size of a dustbin, one doesn't

Two different lenses...

Yeah so as many other questions.

Can I vote if I don't have one? lol I would go with the 24-70mm. Maybe they will introduce this lens with IS soon. I would jump on that.

Nuts, what exactly do YOU want to do with this lens. THAT should be your determining factor.... not what anybody else thinks. Do you have a specific need? Is there a type of photography you can't do without this lens?

If you have surplus cash just buy both and be done with it. Otherwise search the threads and you will see a ton of other opinions on this. Good luck with your decision.

As Stuart put it, it all comes down to what you want to do with the lens. That goes for every lens and body. Having 2.8 gives you the ability to better separate your subject from the background. The good L zooms do that well enough (obviously not as well as a good prime).

On the 1.6 crop, neither are going to be wide, but the f/4 IS has a longer reach. If that 35mm more is valuable and the f/4 aperture is not an issue then it covers you strengths better.

This subject is probably in the top 10 for most debated lens on the board.

As stated, this isn't really a debate as to which I need. I know that I want the 24-70. I need faster lens rather than the f/4, despite it's reach. I was just wondering what others here have and/or what most people tend to lean on. I know that it depends on what the use is but as much as or as long as this has been debated the bottom line is fast lens is important to me.

The 24-105 on the other hand just stirs my curiosity because I wonder how much reach it really gives. I usually have my 70-200 to do that for me.

I think they are both great lenses, I personally think that the f/4 on the 24-105L is fast enough and it delivers awesome indoors shots when using a flash. The fact that you have the 70-200 f/4L IS, I think you should just go for the 24-70 f/2.8.

Precisely what I say every time another silly thread asking about these two lenses comes up. I wish people would search, or decide for themselves. Your own particular photography and shooting style should make it clear which is more appropriate.

Yes but the other thread only died a little while ago, opinions dont change THAT fast

Also as others have said, what is the point of asking what others prefer? if everyone says the 24-70 does that mean the OP will follow their lead like a lemming?

Both lenses are great, but what one person raves about another thinks is nothing special.

I see this as someone posting "Do I need a claw hammer or a ball peen hammer?"

It all depends on what you are planning to do with that hammer. While they can both be used to hammer nails, one is designed specifically for that purpose.
