I can't for the life of me decide between the 70-200 f/4L and the 70-300 IS USM. I was kind of set on the 70-300, but i keep reading things about the L that make think otherwise.

I would mainly use it outdoors during the day. One event i am looking forward to using my new lens for is the Petit LeMans at Road Atlanta. Will i be fine with the L, or will i be wishing i had IS and 100mm more range?

How about some pics to help me decide?

I shot PLM at RA last year with a 70-200 f/4. It was great. I used my 1.4 x TC with it as well. I also rented a 500.

HERE (external link) is my gallery.

It is a magnificent lens. Here are some karting shots:

5D and 70-200, it's a nice, sharp and lightweight lens, I love it.

Hey Chris though I have to admit to not having used the lens (i have the 120 - 300 2.8) why not look at the 100-300 f4 sigma it would give the f4 speed and the extra 100mm. I notice quite a few people use it.

The pics look great.

I am trying not to put so much importance on IS, seeing how photographers for many years got along just fine without it. It would be nice though. I can't stop thinking about the L quality, however.

Are you talking about one of these?

I already have the cheap Canon 75-300 mm f/4-5.6 III. I'm looking for an upgrade.

I love the lens but when I go to shoot Targa Newfoundland every year I still arrange a loan of the f2.8 model for the week.

If I had to guess, when he's referring to a 100-300, he's talking about the 100-300 (external link)

If i was going to spend that much, i would get the IS version of the f4 or the 2.8. The wife is going to have a hard enough time dealing with what i am spending:(.

Here's a couple of fit birds shot with my (ex) 70-200 f/4L. I've since traded it for a Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, and I have a cheapo Tamron MC7 2xtc which works just fine with it, to give me extra reach.
