Hi Keith, I do not yet have experience photographing the aurora from Fairbanks - but I'm planning a trip there in March. The aurora are a fascination of mine, so I've spent a lot of time researching this. Most northern lights photographers prefer the Sigma 20mm f1.8 on a 1.6 crop camera like the 30D. There are a few good sources online including:

I am sure you already know that October can be a pretty good time for the aurora in the Fairbanks area...since aurora activity seems to be a bit more frequent near the spring/autumnal equinox. Yet March is generally accepted as a better likelihood of succes (and that is when many aurora photography tours occur) since the climate is drier and skies typically clear...yet much colder.

Please keep up posted on your results;)

Todd
