My Canon 17-55 IS is starting to vibrate like crazy. I can hear the IS buzzing and see the image vibrating through the viewfinder. If I zoom in and out it stops and sometimes it works without issue. With the IS turned off the lens works flawlessly.

Has anyone else seen this phenomenon and if so, have they had it fixed, and how much did it cost, roughly?

Is there an easy fix for this besides sending it into Canon? It does it on both my xti and my 40D so I know it's the lens. It is not under warranty.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

There have been alot of threads on this topic, especially in the wedding forum where this lens is the main bread and butter of alot of shooters. Unfortunately this is the beginning of the IS unit failing. It has to go to Canon, not sure of the cost, but waiting for the day it happens to mine!

Um, that's called anti-stabilization, a new feature.

I had one do it, send it to Canon for repair. It's a common issue with these lenses. My first 17-55 did it, my second and third didn't do it (I have two now, one as a backup).

It's the new undocumented feature. "Coffee addict stabilisation mode" Drink my coffee and you will match the lens.

No seriously. If it's still covered by warranty get the lens looked at ASAP. It's the beginning of the end for the IS unit.

You need to be more sensitive, you must have been sent the Parkinsons model by misake from Canon.

Sorry I forgot to add. One last thing I'd check is the contacts to make sure the lens is making a clean connection with the body. If your contacts are covered in muck and enough current can't pass that will absolutely put a spanner in the works.

I'm glad everyone found this so amusing!

I checked the contacts, cleaned them and the thing still vibrates like a cheap electric lawn mower.

I contacted Canon and it was only $93 dollars to fix it, so it's on it's way to Irvine.

I figure it's worth it for a great piece of glass. Hell, maybe they'll even send me a new one!

I guess you can't expect too much for a thousand dollars these days.

I knew I should have bought a 24-105.

Canon really need to do a recall of these lenses, or fix outside warranty, it's a fairly widespread problem but they haven't acknowledged it yet.

Shhh! The lens might hear! Don't hurt the lenses's feelings!
