Sigma Lens Calibration Question

So I've just received a copy of the new 50mm f/1.4 EX that's front focusing slightly. I emailed Sigma and they told me that it's preferred to send in my camera body along with the lens. For those of you who've sent your Sigma lens in for calibration, did you also send in your camera body? It's rather inconvenient on my side to send in the camera body along with the lens especially if they take a long time with the calibration. Also, Sigma seems to have several service centers as well as the headquarters. Which site do you guys usually send your lenses to?

I have a 24-70 that needs to be calibrated, the person I was in contact with just said to let them know what body I was using and they would calibrate it to that body. Nothing about sending in a camera.

The EOS body that Sigma-NY use for calibration is up to spec (I know because I recently had them recalibrate a few lenses which are now spot on).
I would send it without the camera, if it comes back still off, good chance your camera would need a calibration.

the service request form only ask for which camera body. doesnt require you to send in anything but the lens, warranty card, receipt, and list the problems. i remember reading it was only the xt or xti bodies that needed to be sent in with the lens.

youre not using a 40D are you?

anyone could give me the full address of Sigma-NY and a rought indication of the cost of calibration for a 24-70 and 18-50

I use the sigmas with both 20d and 40d

It's a 5D. This is actually the second copy of the lens I've received and the first one was tack on with the exact same body. I think I'll take my chances sending the lens in alone. Thanks guys.

I have had 2 sigma lens's calibrated twice now by Sigma's dealer here in Australia and recommend you get them to calibrate the lens on your camera body. Reason being is each camera body can be slightly different in their"in spec" focus tolerances. When I had my 24-70mm done I had just changed from a 20d to a 40d and noticed a slight change in the dof focus point. It was back focusing again after originally having it fixed for the 20d. The "control" 40D the distributer had in the workshop was slightly different to my 40d and had they calibrated to that it would have been different on my 40d...even though they were both "in spec" the bodies were at either end of the acceptable tolerances thus giving enough difference to be evident in the calibrated lens's behaviour.

This is also why focus changes can be made at two levels...the lens level and then at the body level

its not your camera..there is a BIG issue with that lens..i had one and sent it to sigma and they said it was fine. but it would have a SERIOUS backfocus from anything 10feet and further..from 6feet and closer it was amazing. It seems almost everyone has this issue. I sold mine after 3weeks of owning it and took a $100 loss

I wouldn't be surprised that the majority of these lenses have focusing issues due to Sigma's notorious QC but I actually had a copy earlier (shipping box and lens case were damaged during shipping by UPS) that focused perfectly. I was really regretting sending that lens in as it was perfect optically and functionally but I couldn't stand the idea of mold developing in the future.

no this is not QC...this seems to be a design issue either with the Canon AF system or the lens design itself

The way it was explained to me by Sigma was that as these lens's are made to fit all brands of cameras that there was the chance that these lens's would need some tailoring to the individual camera brand and model. Im not so sure I believe this as surely Sigma can differentiate by Brand simply by way of the lens mount and specify/meet tolerances within each brand regardless of whether each brand has different requirements. Then it should be no difference to someone owning a model within that brand as the "brand" lens should fit all models as does Canons and Nikons lens's. They also went on to say that Canons QC leaves a lot to be desired in respect to building bodies within tolerance focus wise! They said they had seen numerous instances of "out of spec" bodies from Canon. This I partly believe as I have infact also returned a body to Canon that needed adjustment separate from the lens.

Speak to Canon and they will tell you the opposite....go figure!
