It seems to interfere with the built in flash on my 30D. It tends to block some of the light & shadows the subject.....
Does anyone else have this problem?

I noticed that the lens itself created shadows in my pictures with the on camera flash on my xti. Perfect reason to buy a flash!!!:D

Yes, most fast wide/normal zoom hoods will block the pop-up flash.

Ultra wide angle (wider than ~15mm) will also have insufficient coverage at the edges.

I use a Canon 5DIII and a Sony A7rIII

You need to stop using the built-in flash!

your next purchase---- flash.
your pics will be much betterfor it. i have a few long lenses which makes my built in flash unusable.

You'll need to remove the hood to use the pop-up flash. Even then, I think I remember you still can't zoom all the way out to 17mm.

With all that gear listed, I'm surprised a flash isn't listed. I'll trade you my 430EX Speedlite for your 135L that you have for sale. ;)

I think all of my zoom lenses block the pop-up flash, to some extent. I assume it's designed more for not being blocked by the kit lens. But yes, you need to use a hotshoe flash with the larger lenses. I was just looking at the prices of used 430EX units - they're running about $200 apparently.

Just to reiterate, stop using the built in flash. . .

Get yourself a decent external strobe & a set of wireless triggers and you will be in a whole different ball game. . .

Judging by your gear list, the 580EX2 would compliment your collection nicely. . .

I found out about the shadow after looking over a days worth of pics. As stated above, I now only use the 430ex.

Even without hood, the 17-55IS cast shadow on close subject anyway. External flash should soft your problem
