Hmm...The first thing I do is make sure the lens is set at a relatively long focal length (I start w/ 55mm). This is so you have a low magnification to start, it can always be increased if need be. Then make sure the edge of your lens is at the pin thing on the mount, just for alignment purposes. If you've never used this technique or macro photography, it can seem impossible to focus. In terms of this, I have two suggestions. The first is get closer than you think you need to, the viewfinder can be quite dark, just keep moving back and forth until you have something in focus, or close. The second is use a flash! The ladybug was taken w/ just the XT's pop-up flash, but that was plenty. When actually taking the picture, put the drive mode on the multi shot mode, and take as many pictures as possible. The law of averages says that one of them will be in focus. Finally, meter w/ a wide open aperture before you take off the lens. Chimp w/ the histogram and adjust as needed. ISO and shutter speed are very important here, because the aperture cannot be adjusted. Conor - my flickr
