Couple of a friend's show dobermanns.

Hand held as couldn't be bothered lugging a tripod to a dog show. First go with this lens:

This boy is a champion show dog, you can see why - such a handsome face and lovely nature too.

Better to get a 100mm macro or a 60mm macro... imo
100mm is awesome on full frame and gives such incredible details @2.8 (because its eye bleeding sharp)
60mm is the same.. but more ideal for a portraits on a crop sensor..
both can be used to take nice flower shots with heaps of detail and double as portrait lens's

hello!

thanx for reply!
can you archive some pic at min focus distance??

In answer to the actual question, here are a couple from me at or near minimum focus distance (which is 1.2m).
Here's a skipper moth at 200mm, 1/250, f/8, ISO 200 on a 30D:

It can work very well for flowers too. Here is one at 163mm 1/500 f/8, ISO 200 also 30D:

This lens is seriously sharp when you get it right. Here's a 100% crop from the last pic:

I hope that helps you conclude it's a very useful lens, and for the price you get excellent quality. That at least is my view :)

PS I suspect the artefacts are a result of a fairly course conversion straight to JPEG from RAW. In any case, they are not contributed to by the lens.

Mark.

i have seen in your gearlist that you own this 70-200 and a 100mm macro.
wicht do you like more?

a prefer macro for 2.8 aperture and close up but i think teh 70-200 f4 is a great lens.

good luck!

Thanks! They are both excellent lenses, but I use them for quite different things normally. The zoom is very versatile, and is small, light, and well-built, all of which make it excellent to handle. Although the macro is a stop faster, I rarely use it wide open. When focussed close, depth of field is very shallow. Of course it goes very much closer, so for maximum close-ups the macro is the one to choose.

If you only want one, you need to think about what you want to photograph. You won't be disappointed with either one in terms of quality. Good luck choosing!

Mark.

This is probably my favorite lens. Had it for a couple months now and this is the one lens I can guarantee I will never get rid of...
